NAME:Kyle MillerPOSITION:Independent Radio PromoterFORMAT:Rock and RhythmicMARKET:Lake of the Ozarks, MissouriCOMPANY:Inside Out PromotionsBORN:July 20th in Central IllinoisRAISED:Illinois
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started in music at 10 years old being a mobile DJ. My parents gave my friends and I money to start one. I then began working at Spirit FM radio in Camdenton, MO at the age of 15. I worked there for 12 years, being on every shift and being a music director. I then moved on to what I do now, being a radio promoter.
1. What made you want to get into the music business? Early mentors? First job?
I have spent a lot of time on the phone talking to other promoters: Shannon Becker, Michelle Younkman and many more. I loved how they used their knowledge and talent to push a song to #1. I have always been impressed with this aspect of the industry. My mentor has been Shannon Becker. At GMA everyone would think that we were related (even though we look like complete opposites) I enjoy his attitude, love and his drive for the industry.
2. What does Christian Radio need to do in order to break through to a mass audience on a more consistent basis?
Listen to the mainstream stations in your area... What are they doing? We need to format our stations to not only encourage Christians, but to bring others to Christ.
3. What made you decide to become and independent promoter?
I thank John Butler at Curb records for helping me get started as an independent promoter. He taught me so much, and he took a chance on me with Plumb's rock single "I Can't Do This".
4. What do you like best about your job? Least?
I enjoy meeting and talking with radio stations all over the nation. I just left a station where I was doing the morning show with my best friend KC. I miss laughing with him every morning.
5. What is your favorite radio station? Who is your favorite personality?
I can't really play favorites, but I love hearing Lisa Williams in Florida. She was the PD that took a chance on a 15-year-old DJ to work at Spirit FM. I am so grateful to her for giving me a chance. I am also so impressed by how she works so smoothly on the air, and she can turn any blooper into the best radio break ever!! Go Lisa!
6. What's your take on current music? Is it as good as say, six months ago? Better than it was? Same? Elaborate?
I think that the Christian industry has come a LONG way since when I even got involved in it some 12 years ago. I am excited about where it has come from, and where it is going next. I see more and more, new bands that are "stretching" the industry, and busting out of the box that so many people have put them in. I know that we will continue to better ourselves so that the Gospel will be spread.
7. Who has had the biggest impact on these facets of your life: Personal, Professional and Spiritual? Why?
Personal: I think my daughter has such a personal impact on my life. She teaches me every day that you shouldn't "sweat the small stuff" and to "laugh a LOT more"... And she is only 4 years old. Thank you Kaitlyn.
Professional: John Butler and Shannon Becker. These guys are so wise to the music, and it impresses me so much.
Spiritual: My dad. He is a spiritual giant. I have always looked up to him for advice, and I will continue to do so till I'm gone.
8. If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
This is a tough question... I have been in the music business since I was 10 years old. I guess I would be a youth minister, or travel around and be a consultant to churches.
9. Best advice for younger, less experienced music promoters?
I am young and still not the most experienced promoter, but I have learned a lot in the short time in this... I would say that one of the biggest things that has helped me out is advice from others in the industry, and definitely a good personality.
10. What is it that motivates you to be 'All You Can Be'?
I want to be the promoter that can deliver, but is also honest about what I can deliver on. I strive to be the best at all I do (you should try my cooking). I work for God and not for man, this is what drives me the most.
