BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Based in the heart of Hollywood, Mosaic MSC is a music collective born out of the church of critically-acclaimed pastor Erwin McManus. Earlier this year, the group released its first single to Christian radio, "Tremble," which hit Top 20 status at Nielsen/BDS and Mediabase. Their latest EP, "Heaven" was released on September 14th via Provident Label Group.
1. How did Mosaic MSC come into fruition? Has it evolved much, personnel-wise, mission-wise, stylistically, from when it started?
We wanted to express the growth and movement that Mosaic was experiencing. We believe everything must be relevant to culture and move with God - so we have evolved alongside those beliefs.
2. Much of Mosaic's branding expresses a desire to expand its "global reach." What does that mean, more specifically?
We believe the world needs the way Mosaic communicates the gospel, and want it to be readily accessible.
3. What are the members of the band doing when not performing with Mosaic?
Most of the band is part of the Mosaic church staff, serving in or alongside the worship ministry.
4. The Church, the Gospel and the spreading of it isn't inherently "cool" in any popular culture and never has been. Considering Mosaic is based in Hollywood, how has the church/band navigated its culture while effectively sharing a message that is so countercultural?
We don't consider LA something to be navigated - it's the city we love and the people we love; and people who define and shape culture in LA love Jesus. None of it is separate to us.
5. You experienced some decent radio success this year, as "Tremble" reached into Top 20 chart status. What was the motivation behind the band's decision to pursue a radio promotion campaign? Was that pursuit an easy or difficult decision?
Easy. Why wouldn't you want more people to have access to a song you believe will positively impact their life?
6. What was the songwriting process like for this record? Before a song actually makes it onto a record like your new studio project "Heaven," how many hands touch it? How was it decided what songs made the cut?
We mostly write together as a group - a song is shaped and informed by whatever hands that need it. The final song selections were decided by Pastor Mariah McManus and Pastor Erwin McManus.
7. Who are the musical and philosophical influences (besides the Bible) that comprised the creation of "Heaven?"
It's impossible to create a list of every person or piece of art that touches or inspires everyone who contributed to the record!
8. You get an opportunity to perform one song from "Heaven" to a large group of world leaders. Which song from the album do you choose, and why?
We consider our church gatherings in LA to be large groups of world leaders each week! We play them all.
9. Earlier this year, Mosaic was part of the 2018 Outcry Tour alongside other nationally-recognized worship groups; how did you experience that tour seeking to serve the Church on each stop outside of simply performing on stage each night?
It was great meeting people in the breakouts and Q+A sessions and around the cities as we traveled.
10. What do you anticipate the remainder of 2018 will look like for Mosaic MSC?
We have Mosaic Conference in November in Los Angeles and we know it will be incredible! The future is full of hope.
