1. You recently joined forces with Lauree Austin to host the afternoon show on KCBI. What's it like to have an on-air partner again?
It’s pretty great! Lauree Austin is such a bright light and it’s just a blast having someone who makes me laugh and is such a good friend away from work. I’m really fortunate she was up for this partnership, because this was her show before.
2. Where do you find content for your multiple daily shows?
Maybe a better question is where don’t I find it? I search all the usual places that one can go. I don’t have social media but I check key Twitter accounts and have plenty of notifications coming at me on my phone. I keep notebooks in the Notes App on my phone and computer and save anything at all that looks interesting or inspiring. I try to remember and write down interesting things I hear, or less often, say. One of my favorite stops is Perry Michael Simon’s “Talk Topics” here on All Access.
3. What is one of your most memorable on-air moments?
I was a part of two station sign-ons, the first in 1988 at Family Life Radio in Detroit, and the second at WCFL (now WBGL) in suburban Chicago. Those will always be cool moments.
4. You've interviewed a lot of CCM artists. Which one stands out to you the most?
When I asked Amy Grant to share a favorite bible verse and she literally sang an entire chapter out of Colossians, with no script.
5. What is the greatest piece of coaching advice you’ve ever received?
Probably to value clarity over comprehensiveness, which is something John Frost used to say to me, and “just give them the gospel” which is something Jon Hull said, and demonstrated.
6. What is one thing you’d wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
The amount of concern I have had over the years about what other radio people think is inversely proportional to its importance. In plain English, it doesn’t matter what other people in the radio industry think, even though I really, really, really like it when they think well of me, if ever.
7. If you weren't in radio, what would you be doing for a living?
I honestly don’t know. Probably something else that involves talking.
8. Who is a talent that you really enjoy listening to?
I can’t name them all. It’s a big list. I’ll name 3 … Brant Hansen, Kevin and Taylor from The Fish Atlanta, and Bonnie Curry at KLTY. There’s lots more.
9. What are you most looking forward to in the coming year?
Being more free in Christ, watching us all be free from this awful pandemic, and being a grandfather for the 3rd time.
10. What do you like to do for fun?
I collect and listen to vinyl on my Hi-Fi stereo, just like it’s 1978. I also love photography, and band scanning on my collection of portable radios. I’m not a real exciting dude.
