1. Would you please provide a brief synopsis of your radio journey?
The simple answer is… WayFM! Have worked in some capacity at WayFM for my whole career post college (shout out to my alma mater Cedarville University and their amazing radio department led by Mr James Leightenheimer). Spent 8 years at WayFM in Fort Myers, FL doing a variety of jobs, and then have been working out of our Franklin, TN office since 2010.
2. What has been the most challenging part of your career?
Learning that it’s not all about me, my likes, my favorites (and that it’s not all about the radio station). It’s all about the listener and serving her well and not just what I think she would like.
3. What is the best coaching advice you've ever received?
It’s been a minute since I’ve been an on air talent, but probably was to be authentic and real and don’t try to just mimic others. (Or, because I tend to be a fast talker, to slow down a bit so that people can actually understand what I’m saying. Ha!)
4. How do you show prep each day?
Again, it’s been a few years since I’ve done a regular radio show, but when I was on, my show prep was mainly about what was really going on in my life and what was around me. I kept a note on my iPhone where I would constantly and quickly jot down something when it happened so that I wouldn’t forget when I came in to discuss potential topics with my show host. (We also subscribed to prep services for additional ideas, but real life was always the primary concept on our show)
5. What is one thing you’d wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
That I didn’t already know everything just because I had studied it in college? Ha. That’s probably the real life answer. Outside of that, my advice to anyone else who is getting into radio would be to be open to learning everything and don’t look at any job at the radio station as beneath your stature. Become as well rounded as you can and learn about the other jobs at the station if you can, even the ones that aren’t in your lane.
6. Who is a talent or a show that you really enjoy respect?
Our WayFM talent; they are all amazing from Wally and the crew on the Wally Show, to Bekah, to Joy, and to Brant and Sherri on the Brant Hansen show. And really, I have love for many of those who have gone on to other things who were once on our shows like Justin Lairsey, Carlos Aguiar, and CJ Lusk.
Also, it wouldn’t be an interview about Christian radio if I didn’t shout out to Mike Couchman.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
My life is mostly an open book, but if you don’t know me well, you may not know that I’m a huge nerd, and as part of that, I have a large Mr Potato Head collection featuring him as Super Hero, Star Wars, and other sci-fi/fantasy kind of characters.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
Like most people in the modern era, it’s chargers for my iPhone, Apple Watch, and other electronics
9. What are you most excited about this year?
(Hopefully) getting back to a sense of normalcy and the world returning a little closer to what it was pre-pandemic
10. What do you like to do for fun?
My latest hobby and obsession is cooking on my pellet grill smoker; got it in mid December and since then have made food on it at least twice a week and have tried so many new recipes. It’s fun and delicious! Working my way up to being a pellet grill master!
