1. Please share the story of how God used your brother’s passing to change your heart and future.
When Jacob passed away, God put something inside of me that has never been there before, and it was the desire to worship Him. I had been a Christian for about four or five years prior, but I didn’t know the Lord intimately or personally. When Jacob passed away, I began to just really have this desire to worship Him in a big way and God used the season of losing Jacob to really just shape and mold my heart. It gave me perspective on life and how short life is and that the only thing I want to do is worship God and glorify Him for the time that I have on Earth. So, God used Jacob’s death to really mold my heart towards Him in a way that had never been before, and I began to learn to love God through tragedy and trust Him through really, really hard things.
2. Share the most challenging part of the past year.
I would say the waiting period and the unknown period because of Covid and because of all the things the world has gone through this past year. It’s been really hard for me to just be patient and be waiting for the Lord and what He’s going to do. It was also just the fear of the unknown. I like to plan my future a lot so just the fact that this past year in particular has been even worse in that area and I haven’t really gotten to really be able to grasp my future. I see so much more now that He has just answered so many prayers and stuff over the past year, but it definitely feels like sometimes I just don’t know what God’s doing and that has kind of been what this past year was for me.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was...
Someone told me a few months ago that if Jesus Himself had suffer, then what makes us think that we don’t have suffer. That really encouraged me because I feel like a lot of the times we can get so used to living in our own suffering, and it is just encouragement to remember that if Jesus Himself had to suffer then what makes us think that we’re not going to have to go through pain and tragedy? And what makes us think that we’re going to have a perfect life? The Bible talks about suffering a lot, but our hope is in heaven. There is going to be a day that we don’t have to suffer anymore; that we can live in complete and total freedom. I would definitely say that God has been using that quote in big ways in my life.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
I would say just spending intentional time with Him, reading the Bible every day, worshiping Him, and taking time to talk to Him. I talk to Him like I talk to anyone else because we’re not required to talk a proper way to God, and we don’t have to bow down a certain way and pray to Him a certain prayer. We can talk to Him like our earthly father and that’s the way that He wants us to talk to Him. He wants us to tell Him our daily struggles and talk about our day to Him. One of the main ways I grow my relationship with the Lord is just by speaking to Him like He’s my dad because He is my dad. I talk to Him about things that are going on, things that are bothering me, and even my sins. I think sometimes it’s easy to think that we can’t ask God a question, but God loves our questions, and He welcomes our questions.
5. Share about that new song of yours...
My Jesus came from literally the pages of my journal. After Jacob passed away, I started journaling, which I had never done before, so what I did was I started to just write down my thoughts on paper and process losing Him and my grief on paper. I was starting to write songs, so I looked back in my journal and I realized I never wrote just Jesus, God, or Lord. I always wrote, “My Jesus.” Always. It was because I was so confident in the fact that He was my personal Jesus; we are His and He is ours. We get to call Him our Jesus. When I wrote that song I just remember leaving and crying my eyes out because of how powerful it was that we get the honor and privilege to call Him that. What is so cool is that we all have the same Jesus, and yes, He is big, and He is the God of the universe, but He is also personal to each and every one of us. He wants a relationship with each and every one of us. I wrote that song from a place of just knowing that He is a personal God and that I can be confident in that. The same Jesus that I get to call, “My Jesus,” can be your Jesus too.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
When I think about the word respect, I think about people that stand up for what is true, and I respect people who go out on a limb for the Kingdom. I really respect Jacob and what he stood for. Jacob really stood for people and for God. He always taught me to love people well, to include people, and to never say a bad word about anyone. Jacob was always just going out on a limb for people being left out or people at school who were being bullied and making them feel loved. That is one thing that I strive to become is the way that he loved people so well. He also made sure I knew the importance of loving the Lord and having a relationship with Him. Something that Jacob said to me a few months before he died was, “Anne, don’t ever judge someone because you never know what they are going through. You never know what someone is suffering with. You just never know.” Jacob was always pointing me back to the truth of Jesus and just loving people and not judging one another. That’s another thing about Jacob; His friends could always count on him in such a big way. He was very loyal and would always do anything for anyone including strangers. He just had a heart of pure gold, and I respect him for those reasons.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
I was planning on going to school to become an astronaut. I wanted to be an astronaut all my life until Jacob passed away.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
My essential oil diffuser. It is a must have! I have my stress relief, eucalyptus, lavender, and thieves oil. I am a huge essential oil person. I also have my Bible and a picture of me and my baby cousin who is my absolute heart.
9. What are you most excited about this year?
I am most excited about all of the shows I get to play and all of the people I get to share the gospel with because we haven’t been able to with covid. Just getting back out there and getting to witness to people for the Kingdom with also a chance to hear peoples’ stories is going to be so amazing. What is so exciting about all of this, too, is that now I have music out so this will be my first year playing shows with my music out to the world. It’s going to be cool to get to hear people sing the songs with me and just experience people and how God is using these songs to impact them.
10. What do you do for fun?
My grandad has a farm in Kentucky which is where I spend a lot of my time. We have animals on the farm and a side-by-side called a Ranger that I drive around the farm in.
