1. Please tell us how 2020 changed your relationships?
2020 completely changed my relationships largely because I became a first-time Dad. My son, William, was born May 12, and I was so blessed to have the time with him I have had. I also was able to be home with my wife for over a month before he was born. We had picnics in the neighborhood and at home date nights, which were so important especially because time is such a commodity one you have kids. Sidewalk Prophets started to perform virtual shows so that we could continue to maintain and cultivate relationships with our our loving and supportive fans, the Great Big Family. It was great to get to perform shows and then go home to help with the baby.
2. Share the most challenging part of the past year.
The fear of the unknown seemed to be the largest struggle for me in 2020. Supporting my wife and brand new son when not being able to tour and the terrifying mystery of the virus were a couple issues that kept me up at night. The struggle was mighty for everyone last year. Fear of the unknown has always been prevalent in life, but last year multiplied that fear.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
The best advice I have received during 2020 was straight out of God’s word. James 1:2 has always been a life verse. To “consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds” is tough to live, but holding on to God’s promise of joy in all things helped last year. Finding the blessings in every day, actually naming them and thanking God for them, became a way to turn my mind from worry towards what I knew God was already taking care of.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
My family is blessed to attend a church that continues to livestream every service. To get to go to church, even while at home, is a powerful reminder of what God wants us to hear. Making sure I still get plenty of time with Christ daily by praying and spending time in the Word continues to be of utmost importance in maintaining that close relationship with Jesus.
5. Share about that new song of yours.
Our newest single is a song called “I Believe It Now.” So often throughout life I have wrestled with wondering if God could actually hear my prayers. Through broken relationships and a hurting heart, I wasn’t sure about much of anything. Over the years I have found that when I look back on those toughest moments of life I now can see how God has used those moments to strengthen my love for Him. Those moments allow me to help others going through similar situations. I couldn’t always see what God was doing in my life, but now I believe He was with me in every situation.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
I have massive amounts of respect for my wife. I already loved her so much before our child, but to see her selflessness in taking care of our son is a front row seat to Psalms 31. Our son is so full of joy and smiles contagiously. I think that is a physical reflection of the way his momma loves him. It makes me so deeply respectful of all mothers. I’m gonna call my mom right now and let her know she is amazing!
7. What would surprise people most about you?
I think people would be surprised at my introverted side when I am off the road. I love to read and just hang out in the backyard with my son listening to nature. It’s those still, quiet moments when I sometimes can hear God speaking and get inspired to write. I am so busy having fun on stage and acting silly that I think people might not suspect how much I enjoy an introverted Sunday. I also don’t think people expect me to be able to sing like Michael Jackson when they first see me, but I always get a laugh when I get to sing some MJ when no one expects it.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
My nightstand was very neat and tidy a couple days ago. I had a picture of my grandfather, a candle that smells like fall, a picture of my wife, and a Walt Disney quote on it. But now in addition to all those things there is a pile of important tax documents I need to work on, Alexander Hamilton’s biography, and a pair of clean socks for no apparent reason.
9. What are you most excited about this year?
I am excited to play some live shows! It has been so long since we have played for an audience. I miss the excitement and connection that comes with playing a live show. Excited that this summer we will get back out there again.
10. What do you do for fun?
The most fun I have right now is just playing on the floor with my 10 month old. He loves his stacking cups and has recently learned to dunk all of his toys in his little basketball hoop. Watch out LeBron! I also love exploring cities, drinking good coffee, reading books, watching movies and playing video games, but I honestly haven’t played a video game since before my son was born.
