1. Please tell us about your career journey.
I got into radio accidentally by volunteering to be on a call-in program for teens when I was a youth minister. With a degree in religious studies and psychology I figured CCM radio would be a perfect fit! Seriously though, my story is like many of our listeners’. I found Spirit FM when I was at a very low point in my life and the message of hope I heard through the speakers helped bring me back into relationship with Christ. That led me into ministry and now into ministering on the radio. My passion for this radio ministry comes from its impact on my own life. I’m honored that God allows me to be part of sharing the same hope I found all those years ago.
2. Share the most challenging part of your career.
I’m an extroverted enneagram 3 so the hardest part about working in radio for me is not being face to face with the people I minister to. I love building relationships with people so to have that relationship with the listener feel one sided was a big hurdle for me. I’m grateful that after 13 years on air I have people I think are strangers come up to me and give me a hug like we are best friends. It reminds me I’m not just talking into an empty box.
3. The best coaching advice you've ever received was…
“Less but better.” Thanks, Paul Goldsmith!
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
I would say getting together with other radio folks, but we all know how that’s been. Honestly the lockdowns were tough on me as I tend to retreat when left alone. Thanks to zoom and a station manager who is willing to invest in his people I have been able to connect and work with Paul Goldsmith over the last few months and that has really restored my desire to grow again.
5. What’s one thing you wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
How many great people work in it! The friends I have made on both the radio and record side of this industry are some of the best in my life.
6. Tell us about someone in our industry who you really respect and why?
Gonna’ have to give another shoutout to Paul Goldsmith on this one. (Look at that -three in one article!) He has been generous with his time, talent, energy and knowledge to our staff over the last year or so. I’m astounded by his drive and passion for helping others reach their potential. Not just professionally, but also spiritually.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
That I played bagpipes in a Pipe and Drum marching band for 7 years. (No, I won’t tell you what we wear under our kilts.)
8. What’s on your nightstand?
A small box my grandfather built with random mementos from my life inside, a pair of earplugs because my dog snores, and a charger for my iPhone.
9. What are you most excited about this year?
The return of travel and the possibility to connect with friends and family in person again!
10. What do you do for fun?
My wife and I have recently discovered the exciting world of escape rooms! Being locked in a room with another couple solving puzzles is something I never thought I would enjoy... turns out it’s a blast!
