1. Please tell us how 2020 changed your relationships?
That’s a really great question! Overall, I think the thing that I’ve learned the most is to appreciate every relationship even more. Family, friends, & fans - when you are forced into time away from people, you learn to love more and appreciate what you have. Like the old saying goes, “you don’t know what ya got ‘til it’s gone.” The separation from each other during the pandemic helped us all to realize that.
2. Share the most challenging part of the past year.
Not being sure of what the future might bring. I guess that’s true for all our time here on earth. But this past year has especially been a time of uncertainty and questioning. It’s in those times, we have to turn even more to our faith in God, and trust in His ways.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
Learn how to say "no” both to yourself and to other people. It’s so easy for us to want to please everyone. So often, I’ve gotten myself into trouble by not being more careful with saying “no” to things. We have to remember that there are times when saying “yes” to others means saying “no” to the right things.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
For me, there are three things I try to have part of my life every day. It’s like my medicine:
- The Word of God - I try to read at least a few verses of the Bible every day. It brings me peace and guidance.
- The Holy Spirit - Spending time in prayer and receiving from God’s Spirit is something we should all strive more for every day.
- The Body of Christ - We were made for relationship with God and others. It’s not good for us to be alone. That’s why communion with others who share our faith can help build us up.
5. Share about that new song of yours.
A new album came out in mid-October. Definitely one of my favorite songs from the record is the first single, “River of Life.” It is a fun, upbeat song that is simply an invitation to others to step into an abundant life with Jesus. He invites us to partake of something more than this world can offer. And not until we, as the Scriptures say, “taste and see that the Lord is good” will we fully understand just what we’re missing in life.
Also, my new Christmas radio single, “Jesus Christ Is Born” is going for adds now!
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
There is a long list, but one of my favorite people in the whole world is Steven Curtis Chapman. I’m very fortunate to be touring with him again soon. He was one of the first CCM artists I heard, and I was so inspired and encouraged by his music. But as I got to know him as a person, I became even more a fan of his. He’s done so much to encourage the church and spread the word about the amazing journey of adoption. It has changed my life. After many years of doing this, he still strives to be a man of integrity who continues to grow in his faith and help others. It’s very inspiring.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
I’m a little quieter and more reserved in person than what people see on stage. I’m not being fake, but people definitely see one end of the wide spectrum of my personality from the stage. I don’t really lead a rock star life; I’m pretty much a normal kind of guy.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
There’s always a stack of books that I’m waiting to get to. Right now, there are a couple of books written by my pastor, Dr. Michael Youssef. Also, I’m reading a book right now about Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel. I love reading. I don’t read near as much as I used to. But I still love it.
9. What are you most excited about this year?
Getting back out on the road and playing some new music and some classic hits that people want to hear. I love playing live. There’s nothing like it! I hope to be doing that for a long time. I’m very thankful I’ve gotten to do this for so long, and people still want to hear me sing and share my faith.
10. What do you do for fun?
I am a family man. My wife and I just celebrated 25 years of marriage, and we have five beautiful children ranging in ages from 11 to 22. I love spending time with my family and going on trips with them. I’m a beach bum. I love sitting on the beach and reading a book. Also, I’m a major college football fan. A newer past-time for me is art. I’ve really enjoyed going to art museums across the country and reading books about art. It’s my new favorite thing. I’m writing a book right now about some famous painters and how their faith influenced their art.
