1. Share how it feels to perform live.
My favorite part of performing is hearing people sing along. There's a huge adrenaline rush being in front of people, but I really believe artists write songs to share and connect with people so performing is an integral part of the songwriting process. It's the cherry on top when you know people have been touched by a song so they sing it.
2. Share a challenging part of the past year.
I think managing expectations was one of the hardest parts of 2021. I wanted everything to go back to normal so fast and it has taken longer than I want. But, I’ve learned to really enjoy where I’m at.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
I just got married so I’m getting a lot of advice. One important piece is communication. And I always thought that was cliché, but learning to be honest, intimate, and vulnerable is a lot harder than you’d think.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
That's a daily challenge, but one that is so worth it. I love to read and I have friends that are theologians from seminary that allow me to ask hard questions. My small group has really been helping me a lot too. I don’t think we’re meant to live in isolation, so the small group has been key.
5. Share about that new song of yours.
Desesperado is a really fun song and it uses a fun metaphor to convey a deep but simple message. The title means desperate and I love Luke 7:47 “he who is forgiven of much, loves much.” When we realize the depths of our need for forgiveness it awakens us to love and live life to the fullest. Desperado is all about that.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why.
I really respect my dad. He’s overcome a lot of his own past and adversity to be a man who works tirelessly to help others. I want to live a life of service and he’s inspired me to do just that. He runs a homeless shelter in LA and we’ve been able to do a few projects together.
7. What's one thing most people don’t know about you?
I don’t listen to a lot of music! It distracts me because I start thinking about different parts of the song and I can’t think of anything else. Piano instrumental songs help me focus though.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
A big glass of water always. My phone and a book that I keep telling myself I’m going to read haha!
9. What’s something you’re looking forward to?
I can’t wait for fatherhood. My career has been incredible, but I think it will pale in comparison to the joys of fatherhood. I have friends who are worried about it, but it seems like such a joy to me.
10. What do you do to unwind?
I love to watch a good series or even play some games. Running or exercise helps me as well. And looking up my future dream home!
