1. Share a moment in your career that you’ll always remember.
God has shown again and again how much good there is in people and how powerful we can all be when united together for good. I don’t live in a state known for tornados but just a few short weeks ago we had a EF3. In the days and weeks following the tornado people have been humble, helpful and amazing! So many showed up from Michigan and beyond to help in all efforts from cutting down trees and cleaning up debris to bringing in supplies and cooking meals for those who were dealing with loss. God reminded me that we need to continue to shine a light on the good.
2. If you weren’t working in radio what else do you think you’d do?
I was blogging when I started working in radio as a receptionist. I used content from that blog later to share Kelly’s Thrifty Tips on Thursdays. I’d like to think I’d be writing. I absolutely adore it! I believe that writing will always be at the very least a passionate hobby.
3. Some great advice you've received is…
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The mind can play some awful tricks on us and keep us from what God has planned if we allow it to. Discomfort is often what gets the job done.
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
I keep learning and growing by remembering how very badly I wanted to be in radio even as a child. I didn’t dive right in after college, I went a long round about road, but God’s timing is perfect. So with that in mind, I try to grasp every learning opportunity I can find from my coaching time with Gary Morland, articles, interviews and CMB webinars. I am really excited about the opportunity I had to attend CMB’s Momentum this year. I filled up my notebook! I am walking in answered prayers and I am going to do my best to thank God for every yes.
5. What’s one thing you wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
I had no idea when I began working in radio how much I would grow to love praying for others. I came from a family with a lot of pastors and I never felt like I could pray out loud for someone else. I was frozen over the thought. I learned what an honor it is to do so. Now I get to do it daily as part of my job! It is my favorite thing!
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Virginia Rayner was our Director of Donor Development at Arizona Shine. Virginia defines the word grace in every way imaginable. She taught me how to not let pressure get to me. And the best part about her is, when you are with Virginia you always feel like you are the only person who matters because that is how she feels.
7. What’s something about you that would surprise most people?
I used to do singing telegrams. I think the surprise would be, I do NOT have a voice for singing solo, but really most of us can sing a decent Happy Birthday.
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
I love our front parlor. We have a wall of bookshelves and it is absolutely stuffed! There are large windows that let in lots of light. It is a great place to unwind with a book or look out at the trees in our front yard. After living in Arizona for a year where our front yard was absolute sand, it is a dream having some grass and trees to enjoy!
9. Finish this sentence: My day doesn’t start properly until I...
Thank God and pray. I mentioned earlier that I am walking in answered prayers. Keeping gratitude to God up front helps me center on the blessing when days get rough.
10. What do you to unwind and chill?
Day trips with my husband all over Michigan! We’ve been here almost 5 years now and Scott has a long list of places to visit. We have a music game we play with the radio where we guess the year a song came out and see who is closest. It always brings up great conversations, because we will rabbit trail all about the band and of course where we were in life when that song came out. Any time with my husband is a good time.
