10 Questions with ... Lindsey Capperrune
1. Share a moment in your career that you’ll always remember.
One day when I was doing the Morning Show at WBGL, (probably doing some weird bit on air) the phone rang. It was a guy named Kevin. He called to ask if we could guide him through giving his life to God! I was like “YES IT’S HAPPENING!” This is the whole reason I do this Christian radio thing! Me and Johnathon Eltrevoog led him to his new relationship with Jesus right there on the phone, and it was a great gift that we got to be a part of that.
2. If you weren’t working in radio what else do you think you’d do?
I would have my own you-pick flower farm. I would have many acres of flowers that families could come pick, there would be a little café/bakeshop where people could get lunch and a treat, then take their picnic basket out to the flower farm for their picnic in the flowers. (I’ve thought a lot about this obviously... Do I have a Pinterest board of it? Yes. Do I have a name? Yes. Am I working on a logo? Yes.)
3. Some great advice you've received is…
“BE YOURSELF!” This advice came from Weez Stockton. She told me this when I was first starting in radio. It’s tempting for all of us to try to be like someone else, but there’s literally only one you. Celebrating your uniqueness and living it out is where the magic happens.
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
I try to be alert to everything around me. Eyes up, heart open, ears listening. Being open to what God is saying, what people I love and trust are saying. I notice things- reading, watching, listening, and trying to notice the good gifts of knowledge, peace and enthusiasm around me. It all opens me up to learning and growing. When you’re aware that you need to learn and grow and are open to what God, others and the natural world can teach you, you can take a lot in!
5. What’s one thing you wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
To develop a thick skin but keep your heart soft. It’s hard to keep both, but it’s the only way to stay faithful and humble for a long time. And to be ready for the rollercoaster of a live show. You can be talking about pickles, and the next thing you know a listener is calling in with tears asking for advice on something hard, so you must be flexible and ready to roll with anything that gets thrown your way!
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
I really respect my friends who are on air talents who are going through so much in their personal lives- cancer, relationship stress, grief, loss, hard stuff and yet every day they walk into the studio, vulnerable, honest, and hopeful, still bringing encouragement to listeners. It is incredibly hard to do this, and they have the strength and bravery to do it every single day.
7. What’s something about you that would surprise most people?
I made cupcakes for a country artist’s wedding that was in People Magazine. It’s my claim to fame.
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
The kitchen. It is full of energy- food cooking, people talking and laughing, pots and pans clanking and music playing. I love the smells, prayers being said before a meal, glasses being poured, and my 2 littles under my feet as I’m cooking. There is a lot of love in that room, and then you also have the excitement of the meal you’re about to eat!
9. Finish this sentence: My day doesn’t start properly until I...
hit snooze twice, go on a morning walk, say prayers, use a cucumber mint facewipe, make coffee.
10. What do you to unwind and chill?
Ever since I started doing mornings, I really like naps! I also go to my favorite place in my city- a bluff that overlooks the river, lined with lots of pretty homes- and walk the sidewalk while I think and pray. Iced shaken espresso in hand helps too, even though caffeine is literally of opposite of “chill”.
