Sweet, Sweet Sound (2009)1) Can you give us a brief recap of your musical journey to Sparrow Records?
A demo that I recorded made its way into the hands of Plumb in June 2007. She listened to it and called my house the day after I met her saying she wants to help me further my career in music. Her and her husband took me on and introduced me to Sparrow Records.
2) Tell us what we can hear on the new project: sounds, words, message.
This project is definitely worship. All the lyrics are vertical; they speak to God. There are songs that are corporate, congregational songs that churches can sing on Sunday mornings, and then there are songs that are more personal that you can sing to the Lord while you're in your car or by yourself at home. I would describe the sound as progressive/pop.
3) What's the story behind the new single "Come Save"?
A couple of years ago I started praying a prayer that has been wrecking my life. It is simply, "God, give me your heart. Let me cry when you cry. Let me laugh when you laugh." I remember flipping through channels on my television one night and everything that I saw grieved my spirit. I went in my room and began weeping before the Lord and for the first time, I believe I felt his heart, how hurt he must feel over my sins and the sins of this world. He then lead me to the scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14 where it says, "If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways. Then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and I will heal their land."
4) Do you have favorite song on the album?
Honestly, it seems to change every day. I don't have a set favorite but today I think it's "My Savior." This song comes from the story of Peter walking on the water to Jesus. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he remained on the water, but when he took his eyes off of Jesus, he began to sink. Jesus reached out his hand and rescued him though. It's a great reminder that even when we fall down and scrape our knees, our heavenly father will always be there to pick us back up on our feet and save us.
5) Any interesting or funny stories to tell from your visits to radio stations?
I've definitely had many funny moments on the road. One of my favorite trips to radio stations was with four other artists, Britt Nicole, Josh Wilson, Michael Watson from Above the Golden State and Danyew. We had lots of laughs and good times. Josh Wilson has an impersonation that he does. Next time you see him, ask him to do his "Rodney" voice.
6) What does 2009 hold for you?
I will be traveling a lot, creating more music and doing the work of my heavenly Father. Wherever he leads, I will follow.
7) As you were in the studio working on this new album, did you have any "ah-ha" moments when you thought, "Now we have something - and this is good!"?
Many of those moments, yes. Whether it was a harmony or guitar part. It was a fun process working with great musicians and producers.
8) Which do you enjoy the more: the process or the performance? The studio or the stage?
Definitely the stage. I love to see people responding to the music that God has given me. I love to connect with them and listen to how my music has made an impact on their lives. That's what it's all about.
9) If you could have any job outside music, what would it be and why?
Probably a missionary. I use to go to a home in Guatemala when I was younger and I loved doing mission work and helping those in need.
10) Do you have much time to listen to other artists' music? What are you listening to these days?
I listen to Misty Edwards, Jeff Deyo, Israel Houghton, Phil Wickham, Jon Foreman and many more.
