1. What is the story behind the debut single "Rediscover You"?
As we started songwriting for this project, there was a strong desire to speak honestly, to write lyrics that didn't necessarily project the faith we wanted to have but the faith that we actually have. That meant being honest about doubt, too. "Rediscover You" gave us the opportunity to speak our need for a deeper faith, a more passionate relationship with God.
2. What is the message behind the new album "The Saving One"?
I'm not sure there's one message; rather I think the songs explore a lot of different facets about the Christian walk. Songs like "Declaration of Dependence" and "Absolutely" are bold and unapologetic statements of faith. A few other songs confess doubt. "Father" explores our need for God as our Father and "The Saving One" gives thanks to God as our Savior.
3. What's new about Starfield on the new record: musically and lyrically?
I hate to keep referencing honesty in lyrics; it's not as though our past songs were dishonest. But I don't think we would have written "Rediscover You" and "Something To Say" on past records. We would have edited ourselves and strayed from the subject of doubt.
4. What is your favorite song (if you can just pick one) from the new record?
"Top Of Our Lungs" is the favorite at the moment, just because it's so fun to play live.
5. What has been a highlight or two in the world of Starfield since the last album release?
Touring with Michael W Smith across Europe was pretty amazing. We found ourselves in a restaurant in Geneva, Switzerland, with Michael as he told stories about the "old days". It was surreal for us.
6. What do you hope someone walks away with, after a Starfield performance?
Ultimately, we want someone to have an encounter with God. Some people in the audience go there right away, but some others are so used to seeking entertainment that they fail to seek God. Our hope is that we help create moments where the emphasis is not on the band or on the lights, but that are intimate and personal.
7. You performed with Dare2Share events this winter. How did you get involved with those events?
I think this is our third tour with D2S. Our friend Rolly Richert connected us with Greg Stier and D2S years ago and it was an instant connection. We're sold on their vision, and they support us and treat us like family.
8. Where can people find the band in the coming months? Where will you be touring?
We're touring up and down the West Coast next month. We'll join Franklin Graham for some events in the summer and then we'll do a full tour of the U.S. in the Fall.
9. Do you have much time to listen to other artists' music? Who are you listening to these days?
Yeah, we listen to a lot of other music: some for inspiration, some just to enjoy. Love Phil Wickham's newest record, also Owl City, One Republic and Michael Buble.
10. Did you watch the Canada vs. USA hockey game? Was there any cheering for your fellow Canadians?
Oh yes, we did. 80 percent of the Canadian population watched that game. It was a huge deal to us and great, great game. We love the U.S., but not when it comes to hockey. [smile]
