During my morning commute from my bedroom to my home office, I thought about advice I could offer to music and radio industry personnel working from home due to COVID-19.
Topics That Crossed My Mind …
I’ve seen tips on all sorts of things for people working from home; establish a routine, practice snacking discipline, exercise, put some clothes on, avoid overworking, take computer screen breaks for eye health, video conferencing, and avoid falling into the long nap syndrome. These are just a few of the suggestions being currently discussed during “work at home” social distancing. However, I’m a “call to action guy” and I think this is the perfect time to update your resume.What To Include & Mistakes To Avoid …
Include:
Only information pertaining to radio and not every job you have ever had.Air Personalities…Programming
List the digital automation systems you are familiar with; Prophet/NexGen, WideOrbit, Media Touch, Audio-Vault, Audacity, etc. Also include your production audio editing software expertise, Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit), Pro Tools, etc.Program Directors & Music Directors
List the music scheduling systems you have worked on, RCS Selector, RCS Zetta, Powergold, BSI, Musicmix, Natural Music, etc.List Useful Skills:
- Social Media abilities
- Digital Media abilities
- Web site development/upkeep
- Power Point
- Excel or other spreadsheet programs
- Microsoft Word & Office
Avoid:
- Typos
- Misspelled Words
- Awkward Sentences
- Poor Formatting of Resume
- Editorializing on your achievements
- Writing a sea of text; use bullet points
- Two-page resumes
- Criticizing former co-workers
- Rambling work history - chronological history is an easier read
- Lying about anything – don’t list anything that’s false or misleading
- Listing wrong e-mail addresses and phone numbers of references
Final Word …
Now that you’ve updated your resume, here are a few more things you can do when you take a break from work at your in-home office; clean up old computer files, programmers take another look at the ratings over the past two years and do some analysis, listen to your old airchecks, do some investigation to see what the next hot music consumption App will be, go through your “pre computer” file folders and search for previous ideas that could be updated for use, and take time to pick up the phone to touch base with industry colleagues and talk radio. -
