Are You Stopping To Smell The Roses, Or Not?

Welcome back to Conversations With Kendall! Your mirror might not agree with me, but the beauty of life does not lie in our dyed roots or our spiffed up toes and fingers. While all of those things give us pep in our step, there’s so much more to take advantage of in this time.
We don’t have our normal schedules filled with social events, work to complete, our book clubs, or even gyms to keep us feeling productive and fulfilled.
Just about everything is closed for business. At first, I was sulking in my wide-open schedule, feeling like this must be the end. BUT, once I was through with my pity party, I was able to see the opportunities that lie in this situation. The opportunity to “Smell The Roses!”
We rarely slow down and have real time for ourselves. Now that we do, because it’s so foreign and so many lives have been flipped upside down, we aren’t utilizing this time to slow down, we have, in fact, become even more frantic and scrambling.
The crowd is a little split. Some of us are unable to see their families until COVID-19 passes, while others are doing nothing but spending time with their families until COVID-19 passes. Some of us are going to work despite COVID-19, while others are stuck at home trying to stay busy amidst COVID-19 (let me tell you, being the official house tender is no easy task, I should definitely be being paid LOL). Some of us, depending on how close to fossil form you are, cannot even go to the grocery store unless it’s within the designated hours.
My friends and I have been talking about everything going on and how important it is to use this rare time to really get in touch with ourselves and get some soul food cooking. To us, “Smelling The Roses” definitely includes quality time with family. For those of us that aren’t getting that family stimulation, it’s ok, you won’t be a loner forever, this too shall pass and it’s a great reminder to never take our families and the time we spend together for granted. You will be reunited with the people you love soon.
Loners, don’t feel too badly. How are all of my quarantiners stuck inside with family members holding up? Killed anyone yet?
I don’t have kids, but I do have a goddaughter. We love our sleepovers and let me tell ya, we are having about 3x more sleepovers than the sleepover allotment we had agreed upon. Don’t worry, we are both living fully quarantined lives, so the sleepover is safe, we also wear our masks. Being thorough and cautious is key to making it through this trying time. These rules are not made to be broken.
Anyways, last week I ordered a “Paint By Numbers” kit. I am by no means an artist, hence, the numbers. Determined to create something really impressive, I hunkered down and began to paint. I made sure to stay inside all the lines, pristine. The next evening, my goddaughter comes over and spotted my half- finished painting—and of course she loved it, and I’m always on board to be the cool godmother with painting crafts on deck.
Needless to say, my paint by numbers is no longer mine…the colors are definitely not inside the lines… and pristine is not my adjective of choice LOL!! I had been jacked. As nothing is sacred. Is this how parents feel all the time? If so, to all of my non-stimulated folk, don’t be jelly, all of your stuff gets to be yours all the time, an underestimated plus.
We are each in slightly differing situations. Each comes with their pros and cons. Spend some quality you time with yourself, go on a hike, pick some flowers and put your feet in the water. While we might feel like we are in a super-lonely time with no job and no family interaction, this could be such a beneficial opportunity for us to reconnect with ourselves and who we are. Being comfortable alone is a skill that not many master.
Smell Those Roses!!
