Please outline your radio career so far:
I have spent 20 years with several stations all in my hometown of Albuquerque. I've been with Citadel for the last 12 years. Also in VT with our classic rock station KBZU and WZZS/Arcadia, FL
1) What was your first job in radio?
My first job was spinning "Countdown America with John Leader". The show was on vinyl back in the stone ages, lol.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
Just getting a kick outta recording myself to play radio when I was a kid. Gotta helluva rush just doing that, and knew that's what I wanted to do.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Yes I would, even through the tough times, it's still been rewarding.
4) What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Downloading tunes. The listener has so many places to go now to get music and entertainment.
5) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Probably some 70's disco stuff, Classic rock like Zeppelin or the Stones, or even Barry Manilow (help...lol!)
6) How do you position the station musically and why did you choose this direction?
Very current based, not much gold. Testing has decided this for the most part. "New" "Fresh" "Hot", etc. adds the energetic and youthful appeal that our format has now.
7) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
Read the trade mags and surf around the radio dial. The internet helps everything too.
8) How do you keep tabs on the competition? When your competition attacks you on the air, how do you react?
If they attack me...that's good! That means I've done something right.
9) What approach do you take after a soft book?
I never get too high on a good book, or too low on a bad one. The Arbitron game is too wishy-washy, but it's the only system we have right now. Obviously, we will tweek things all the time to maximize our listenership.
10) As an air-talent how has industry consolidation helped or hurt you? What effect has industry consolidation had on the way you program your station?
It's helped me a lot as I have weathered the storm many times when shake ups have occured. It's given me the chance to learn new skills and be a valuable asset to my employers.
