1. What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first job was with 106.1 KMEL/San Francisco - as a street team member. Practically 7 days a week, you could catch our team somewhere in the Bay area throwing out CD's, t-shirts & calling Rick Chase to get our call-ins played. Rick Chase was a legend in the Bay area. He would always show us love in terms of giving us feedback about our on-air presence and what we could do to improve. If we sucked - he'd play our call-ins over the air and tell us we sucked - on air!! Also, as an African-American female it was important to me to see women of color strive in radio - Renel Brooks-Moon was a major part of my life in radio. As an African-American female - she landed her own morning show (which I had the pleasure of being a part of) and, is also the first African-American female to become a stadium announcer for a major league baseball team (SF Giants). It was an amazing growth period for me while working with Renel.
2. How do you prepare for your show day? What's your biggest challenge?
News - local, Weather, Traffic & Artist News. Once you have those 4 elements in place, you can fit in other material around the essentials like 'good' listener phone calls & relevant topics. Unless you're a News/Talk personality, keeping it light works for me. My biggest challenge is not turning the show into a cross between "Access Hollywood" & "Oprah!"
3. What is your most memorable on-air moment?
While working in Omaha, Nebraska (94.1FM) - I interviewed Mayor Mike Fahey. I told the mayor I had a complaint. I tried purchasing beer on Sunday but was told by the cashier that it is law that you can't purchase alcohol on Sunday before 12 noon. I told the mayor that I had to endure "the walk of beer shame" back to the refrigerator, which was located in the back of the store to put the beer back! I told the mayor it was unacceptable and I wanted him to do something about it... he told me he would definitely do something about it - find me a place of worship on Sundays to keep me out of the stores trying to purchase beer before 12 noon!! HILARIOUS!!!!
4. What is your favorite show feature and what makes it successful?
As I love everything entertainment, my favorite feature on my show is "Tuesday Tales." It's the Hollywood entertainment & gossip part of the show. I've even started a popular entertainment blog also called "Tuesday Tales" @ http://TraceeTuesday.Blogspot.com.
5. Best advice for making a show for a Christian station?
Religion & politics are two of the most difficult subjects to cover. Why? Because everyone's stand, whether it be fact or opinion, is always powerful, emotional and often times confrontational. Most importantly, stick to the facts based on what history tells you. Opinions are always important, just be ready to defend them.
6. Who do you look up to as an air/personality not at your station?
I've worked with some amazing personalities & program directors:
Michael Erickson (Clear Channel- San Francisco), taught me how to be a personality not a jock, how to express your passion for the music. Renel Brooks-Moon taught me the importance of image, knowledge & earning respect among your peers. Buddy Van Arsdale (Cumulus-Nashville) taught me versatility, range and how to recover from setbacks within your career. Finally, Michael Martin (Clear Channel-regional) taught me to push forward even when the path is not entirely paved or clear.
7. If you were just starting out in radio today, but you knew what you know now, would you continue forward?
Yes, but in a different way. Because I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I started out in a top market (#4). Obviously, you learn from the best: Michael Martin, Michael Erickson, Rick Chase, Sway, Renel, etc. But in larger markets, the opportunities come far and between which takes you much longer to excel and move forward. Had I known that when I first began I would have began my career in a smaller market, where opportunities & advancement are readily available.
8. If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
An entertainment reporter for "E" News Or "Entertainment Tonight". Though I'm moving in that direction now, I think, had I not had a career in radio, I would be on the red carpet as we speak! I've had the pleasure of appearing in shows like: "Las Vegas", "Entourage", "Strong Medicine" & "Monk," interestingly enough as an entertainment reporter!
9. What is it that motivates you to be 'All You Can Be?'
When you see an image of your life or what you'd like your life to be for as long as you can remember - those images are sketched & embedded in your mind, body & soul on a daily basis. It sounds almost silly to say though. You find yourself fighting, slugging it out for the things that mean the most to you. For me personally, it's providing for my family, staying healthy & believing and understanding in others and their journeys (not just my own), professionally, I love & life entertainment!
10. What is your favorite quote?
"People are in your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime," by author, Iyanla Vanzant
