Promotion Coordinator for Midas Records Nashville June 2006 - September 20061. Welcome to All Access. Why did this position interest you?
THANK YOU! I'm so excited to be here. Actually this position interested me for a number of reasons. I love to write, so that was a plus. I love meeting and talking with new people, so calling radio was right up my alley. Also, when I asked friends and co-workers, 2-out-of-3 claimed that Kelly Daniel is their best friend.
2. When did you move to Nashville and why?
I moved to Nashville in the fall of 2004 to start my junior year of college at Belmont University. I had been interning at WAIB/Tallahassee, while I attended Florida State, and was told by my DJ at the time, Stace Whitmire, "If you want to work in Country music then you need to transfer to Belmont." I listened and the rest is history!
3. Did you always want to be involved in the music industry? And, what did you think you wanted to be when you were growing up.
I grew up in a home with a lot of music, but I didn't know that was what I wanted to do. I went through phases of what I wanted to be when I grew up. When I was very young I wanted to be a fish (no I'm not kidding) then I wanted to be a princess, Radio City Rockette (gave that up when I didn't met the 5'6'' minimum height requirement), astronaut, the first female president, then decided not to set my goals quite so high - Supreme Court Justice, actress/singer/songwriter, and doctor (hadn't decided which field). The phases stopped about high school when I settled with music. I didn't know what, but I wanted to be involved in the industry.
4. What kinds of music do you listen to when you're at home, in the car etc?
I listen to the most random stuff! I was raised on Americana, and Oldies but have since ventured out. I love Jimmy Buffett, John Prine, Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, Kasey Chambers, Frank Sinatra, Dixie Chicks, John Mellencamp, The Austin Lounge Lizards, Steve Miller Band, Merle Haggard, and Pat Green. I love listening to new music. I picked up a double album of an Australian artist, Neil Murray, at the Australian Festival in Nashville a few weeks back and haven't stopped listening to that.
5. When you were at Midas, was there a particular artist that you gravitated to and really rooted for?
Since we were only working two records while I was there I'd have to say it's a tie.
I wouldn't have considered myself an Emerson Drive fan before I started at Midas. I never really got into their past stuff. With that said, I LOVE the new album, Countrified. It's a new direction for them and they kill it live!
Now Steve Azar, is just plain cool. He is an amazing songwriter and an awesome person. His sound is so unique that I can't help but play my advance to his new album, Indianola, over and over.
I wish the best to both acts!
6. What do you do in your spare time- hobbies, sports etc.
Well, I'm going to warn you, I love baseball. I follow minor league ball more so than the majors, simply because of geography. I follow the Nashville Sounds (AAA Brewers) and my hometown boys of the Round Rock Express (AAA Astros).
Other than that - I love to travel! My goal is to see 48 states by time I'm 25. I went to Australia in March and absolutely feel in love it with. I spend my weekends taking different adventures with my friends and family, whether it is heading to a corn maze, drive-in, sailing with my dad back home in Austin, or finding a new campground I'm up for it!
7. What was the first concert that you ever attended?
Jimmy Buffett, the Banana Wind tour. I was 12 years old and my dad and I went. It was at Southpark Meadows in Austin, which is now a shopping center! I have been a Buffett fan since the day I was born, and that concert was one of the coolest moments of my entire life!
8. You've been in the business for a few years already; who have been some of your mentors, people that may have helped you get started.
Honestly, I have so many, trying to name just a few is almost impossible. Stace Whitmire, Joe Redmond, Gator Michaels, Vic Sorrell, and Clay Henderson have helped me make the toughest decisions of my life. Everyone I've worked with up to now has been a mentor in one way or another, those five people are more catalysts. They have given me the right advice at the right time that changed my life in one way or another.
9. What's your dream job?
I would love to be a novelist - sitting on a beach in Australia, with my computer in tow, spending my days in the sun writing my many adventures, and making new ones. Either that or towel girl for an Australian Rugby League team, oh how I love those Rugby players!
10. What are your 3 favorite current Country records.
Obviously - Emerson Drive "A Good Man" - I love the message of that song.
Carrie Underwood "Before He Cheats" - I can't stop listening to it, I love in your face kind of stuff.
Eric Church "Two Pink Lines" - I really can't explain it but I love this song - I really like his sound!
Bonus Questions
1. Hollywood is making the Erin Duvall story into a movie. Who would play you?
Based on personality, I would say Drew Barrymore. A Fever Pitch or 50 First Dates, Drew, just someone fun and outgoing and doesn't have a problem being goofy. I'm a T-shirt and jeans kinda girl and I think Drew could do me justice!
2. What would be a favorite meal?
My Dad makes AMAZING chicken and sausage gumbo! Hands down the best! Other than that, pretty much anything my mama cooks - she's the best cook in the world!
