1. What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
KPLU in Tacoma, Washington. I worked weekends in college doing the top of the hour ID and weather and making sure the recorded Jazz shows ran. I would have to say that my early influences were definitely Tom Jordan, Evan Bridwell, and Brad Case.
2. What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I had a teacher in high school tell me I had a really nice speaking voice and a friend of mine used to do rock radio in the 70's and I thought "what a cool job"!
3. If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
No way!
4. What makes your station or market unique? How does this compare to other markets or stations you have worked at?
I think because we are close to Fresno most folks lump us in with the Fresno market, but we are our own unique market, The South Valley- Visalia, Tulare, Hanford. The best stations I've worked at, including this one, have a really strong bond with the listeners and the stations are branded very well.
5. Describe your weekly music meeting … a) what is the process when you listen to new music? b) approximately how important by percentage is gut, research, sales, video play, and chart position when determining the status of a record?
Dave-PD, Jenna - MD and I all listen to music separately and then we come together once a week and talk about our opinions and choose our adds. I really think everything (i.e. charts, research, sales, etc) is a tool and should be considered. I think using your gut is the most important of all.
6. Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Blair Garner - That guy is incredible. I saw him do roundtable interviews at the ACM awards one year and he blew me away with how much he knew about the artists and how prepared he was.
7. What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
KMPS/Seattle- I just love their presentation and passion.
8. Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Johnny Cash, Rodney Atkins, Roger Miller, Hank Willams Jr, Dierks Bentley, Motley Crue, Natasha Bedingfield, and Poison.
9. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
It's all about the relationships you build. And don't lie.
10. What was the biggest gaffe you've made on air? (dead air ... forget a mic was still on ... etc.)
While I was talking to my current PD Dave Daniels in the control room. I went to do a break and in the middle of it just went totally blank. Dave was really good about it. He just said "we've all done it".
