NAME:Dr. Shane CollinsTITLE:MD/MorningsSTATIONS:WPAP/Panama City, WDXB/Birmingham, WTUN/ChattanoogaMARKET:Panama City, Birmingham, ChattanoogaCOMPANY:Clear Channel RadioBORN:Tuscaloosa, ALRAISED:Northport, AL
Brief Career Synopsis:
My first gig was at WTXT/Tuscaloosa at age 15. Then I moved on to WACT/Tuscaloosa and then off to WSTH/Columbus for mornings. Then it was off to WLWI/Montgomery, AL to work middays. That lasted one year then I took over the morning show at WDXB. WKKT/Charlotte was the next stop for afternoons. After two years there, I moved to Panama City to work mornings at WPAP. It has been 7 years of fun in the sun in Panama City beach!
1) What got you interested in radio, and what was your first job?
I grew up listening to Patti and The Doc on WZZK/Birmingham. It was a treat every time I turned the radio on. I had to have that job!!!
2) If you were just starting out in broadcasting, knowing now what you didn't know then, would you still do it?
Yes! This is the best job in the world. It's not even a job to me. It's more like sharing the good times and bad with listeners of the station. It's real life.
3) There are so many choices today. Radio competes with the internet, TV, cell-phones, and video games. How important is radio to the average person today?
If radio is local, it can mean the world. Local news, weather, carwash for local high school and local events make radio so personable.
4) If you were to leave radio today and choose another occupation, what do you think you'd like to do?
Maybe bum around the beach for a few years or start my own restaurant.
5) Who's your favorite air-personality not on your staff?
I love to drive thru Nashville and catch Gerry House on the air. If I'm in Atlanta, Rubarb is my choice in the morning.
6) If you could change one thing about the current state of radio, what would you change?
I would love to see staff members in the business crave radio. Passion is something money can't buy and if you have it, listeners can tell.
7) What are you doing better in 2005 than you did last year?
I love my listeners on the air. I'm holding their hand through the radio and letting them lean on me. 2005 is so different. Listeners want to know you and trust you. They depend on a friendly voice every morning.
8) Besides country what is your favorite radio format?
AC...I love the slow stuff. Bring back the late 80s AC and I'm there!
9) What gets you upset at work and how do you channel your anger?
I never get mad but I am a worrier. Where do I need to be, what time does that event start, did I put on clean underwear this morning? I'm always thinking. The guitar I keep in the corner of my office has been outlet for several years.
10) In today's world of multi-tasking and wearing many hats, how do you find time to show prep and what sources do you use?
The show starts at 5:30am and I'm up prepping before 3am. I also look ahead the day before to make sure all local events and happenings are covered. I've found the local paper, the web, your local TV station can all be helpful in prepping the show.
Bonus Questions
1) You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be and don't limit it to our format?
I would have to say Martina McBride. What a voice!
2) You just won the lotto and you have your boss on the line. What's the first thing that you would say?
Do you know of any deserted islands for sale!
3) What's your favorite fast food?
