1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
Started at age 14 at a small Country AM in Missouri. Influences included John Landecker-WLS/Chicago, Howard Hoffman-WABC/New York and Jim Tyler/WDAF/Kansas City
2) Of all the skills that you've gained as a programmer, which area are you not as strong as you would like to be?
I'm always working to improve my communications skills with sales, traffic and promotions. Anybody who still thinks programming is an "island" all to itself is living in denial!
3) Will the advent of satellite radio affect our biz? Explain!
When it all shakes out, I don't think the masses will pay for programming. Numerous surveys have shown that radio doesn't rank anywhere in the "top 100 things people can't live without." Over the next couple of years, terrestrial radio's digital sub channels, display info, etc should help us with the "variety" perceptions among those that rank radio higher in their lives.
4) What can we be doing with our station's web sites to better our stations as a whole?
I think websites should reflect "stationality." Our presentation on The Texas Twister is "quick, hip and about the music." Our site uses less verbiage, the language is consistent with our on-air presentation and we stay away from the old school newspaper block style look.
5) What do you plan to differently in the next year regarding work and family?
I work in Dallas during the week but still live in Oklahoma City. I see my wife, daughter and stepson on the weekends. In 2006 I'm going to strive to do a better job of "decompressing" and leaving the office "at the office."
6) Who are your programming mentors?
I'm a big fan of Gregg Swedberg in Minneapolis, Dan O'Day, and Phil Hunt. I also pick the brain of my current Ops. Manager Lorrin Palagi on a daily basis!
7) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget, with no questions asked, what would it be?
Licensed massage therapist!
8) Favorite artist that you have met?
Probably Keith Anderson and Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts. I DJ'd both of their senior proms in Oklahoma...who'd of ever guessed?
9) What's the biggest record that you completely missed on?
"Some Beach" by Blake Shelton
10) Most surprising record of the past 12 months?
"Summer Girl" by Jessica Andrews. We have nearly 850 spins on it and it still ranks top 20 requests. Currently, the Bon Jovi/Sugarland "Who Says" continues to surprise.
