Charley Pride

The Texas Rangers baseball organization has honored the late Charley Pride by naming a field at their spring training complex in Surprise, AZ after him. Pride, a former baseball player in the Negro and minor leagues, was part of the ownership group that purchased the team in 2010, and he enjoyed visiting with the athletes and stopping by the spring training field frequently. One of Pride’s final live performances before his passing was singing the national anthem at the Rangers' first game at their new Globe Life Field in Arlington in July 2020. Watch the performance here.
“The Rangers have been honored to have Mr. Pride be a part of the team’s ownership group for the last 10 years," the team said in a statement. "A longtime resident of this area, he was a regular at home games when his schedule permitted ... Mr. Pride was a true gentleman, and we will never forget the lasting contributions he has made to the Texas Rangers organization.” (Photo: Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)
