After much speculation, it has been announced that Capitol Records artist Keith Urban has signed on to be a judge on the 12th season of American Idol. Urban, alongside Nicki Minaj, will join the show's current judges, Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson. The season will debut in January of 2013 with auditions in New York City, L.A., Chicago, Charlotte, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City.
"Keith is one of country music's true stars who brings with him charm, wit and knowledge about the industry," said FremantleMedia CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz, about Urban joining the panel.
Not only have American Idol executives made it known that they are thrilled about the array of judges that will be on season 12, but Urban has made a point that he's excited about this new endeavor. "It's really an honor to have been invited to be a part of the American Idol family. I'm looking forward to working with everyone and to seeing the same passion that I have for music in all of the participants," said Urban
Urban has most recently been a judge on Australia's version of "The Voice" but decided to leave after the first season due to "recording and promoting of a new album, a tour and other commitments"
Urban announced in June that he has been working on a new album and the recording would be wrapping up for it by the end of the Summer. He also recently released tour dates in Australia starting in early 2013.
