Legendary, iconic and groundbreaking. These are words that truly fit Merle Haggard, who celebrates 50 years in Country music this year. In turn, the Country music industry will celebrate Merle, and in a big way.
It starts this week, when Broken Bow Records releases "Working Man's Poet: A Tribute To Merle Haggard." The 20-cut album features Country's biggest stars paying tribute to "The Hag." Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley team for "Pancho & Lefty," Garth Brooks gives his rendition of "Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down" and Jason Aldean provide his take on "Are The Good Times Really Over."
Next the Academy Of Country Music (ACM) will bestow its "Crystal Milestone" award on Haggard during the "49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards," Sunday April 6th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and televised on CBS-TV.
It's a fitting honor for Haggard, who became the ACM's first Entertainer of the Year recipient when the award was presented for 1970. He went on to win numerous other ACM honors and was eventually inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
