Friday Night Live
This came up in an e-mail conversation with one of the CHR Night guys. Started doing this with Jo Jo when we launched Wild in SFO. Basically, in the Summer, he did his show from the streets on Friday night. Him, me, and a cell phone. Quick 20-30 minutes hits all over the Bay Area. No Sales involvement. We went to where people were. And it, A. got him out meeting a lot of listeners and B. made us sound very very tapped into the vibe. Which is hard to do when you're locked in a studio. I was riding around with Albie Dee, doing this at 'PGC in 1996. Stuck at a stoplight, there was a limo full of women out on a bachelorette party. Albie jumped in with them and I followed in the van. Two of the great breaks in Radio history. Real Radio. Not scripted canned crap you could hear anywhere. He returned, a changed man. Do this. It's a great great bit.
4/20
Brian Oake at Cities 97 in Minneapolis is one of the most understated funniest people I know. His show is a little like The Simpsons in-that there's REALLY funny commentary woven into the content and you might only catch 10% of it.
A couple of years ago on April 20th he introduced a Bob Marley song while giving the time as 4:20. Somewhere in Minnesota, the 10% of the people who caught it, drove off the road into trees.
Michael Martin wanted to do a music feature on Live in SFO last year and needed titles, so I went to one of the biggest 'heads I know in Radio and she replied with the following list IN ABOUT three minutes. (If we can play drinking songs on St. Patrick's Day, why not a few dope songs on April 20th?)
