Talking To The Kids
Sonoma Media Group is really fortunate to have KSRO which is one of the preeminent News/Talk stations in the country and has won several awards for coverage of fires in the past couple of years. And they’ve been all over the riots and unrest.
Eloy with Hot 101.7 in Santa Rosa was wondering what he could be doing to help get the audience through these uncertain times™.
For adults this is scary and confusing but for kids, this has to be absolutely terrifying. One thought would be to have a guest like a child therapist on to explain:
- Here’s what your kids are probably feeling
- Here are some things that you could talk to them about
- Here are some activities that might help
Experts > DJ’s.
Con Grad ulations
One of the things I lobbed out in the Fathers Day batch on Monday was Dadications. Basically the same thing that dozens of stations did for Mothers Day: you take phone messages from kids saying why mom is great, schedule over the weekend, email or reach out on social media when it’s going to play (so they can brag to the world) and then send them an audio file of it as it ran.
BEN-FM in Philly is taking that approach to the Class of 2020 as they virtually stroll down the aisle: parents adnd sibs calling in messages that will be played back. 957benfm.com/con-grad-ulations-line/
Listener Appreciation Month
We should always appreciate our listeners. Q-102 in Cincy has turned it into a Month. www.wkrq.com/contest/q102-listener-appreciation-2020/
The Millionth Comment
A lot of entities like theme parks have done “countdowns” to “our millionth visitor.” It was something that could occur “at any time”. And then one Saturday a randomly picked person set off horns and a marching band and dignitaries descend on the maingate for lauding this surprised person and their family.
We did that Wild in SFO. The phone company had tipped the station that it’s popularity was so immense that callers to the studio line were actually disrupting phone traffic. And did the station know that it was REALLY close to it’s one millionth caller? So they promised to call the hot line when that call came through, we had a limo with a big fake novelty check out “circling the market” waiting for the alert, and boom they picked a caller who was phoning in a request, sirens went off, they were picked up by the limo and brought down to station for a party.
It was all just BS but it sounded big and it jacked up the phones and DJ’s love busy phones.
Hot 89.9 in Ottawa did The $10,000 Tweet three years ago. They had a hashtag and you had to tweet it and tweet it as often as you could and after 30 days one would be randomly picked to win $10,000. I had to unfollow them because 9 out of 10 tweets in my Twitter feed were their listeners.
So what if you did something based on the millionth comment? Like “Last Comment” you have a legally predetermined moment when that comment will be chosen.
