January
It is a giant vacuous hole of nothingness and you need:
1. A promotion that you can sell
2. Something to talk about
And preferably more than one. I’m doing a Webinar on the 21st at 3 pm CST to discuss 1st quarter holes and the things we can sell to fill them. You can register at Registration (gotowebinar.com)
And Speaking Of January
Brackets are great hole fillers. Audacy in St. Louis did an entire month of food fights: a weekly bracket with a different genre of food.
Post-holiday weightloss is something that people vow to do every January. So what if you did The High/Low How Much Did We Grow? Track every single item of food and beverage consumed between Thanksgiving morning and midnight on December 31st by one of the talent or the morning show. And then just create some insane figure like 1,428,665 calories. Call, guess, and track the high/low prompts to get the exact total to win a gym member, a ski weekend, whatever you can soak from Sales.
“Things Your Crack” for $500, Mayim
Purses are and have always been great prizes. 96.1 NOW-FM in San Antonio is doing Unlock A Louie with listeners cracking a 5 digit code to win a Louis Vuitton.
Something Else For Hallow-week
The morning show at Magic in Albuquerque tested a Halloween topic of kids imaginary friends and it was marginally terrifying.
“Dogs who see ghosts” is actually a thing. A video popped up in my feed of a British couple who had put a Go Pro on their dog while they were gone because the dog would go through periods of acting very strangely in certain rooms in the house. And yep, when they left, you started to hear footsteps and thunks.
It has potential as a topic: do you think your pet sees stuff that you don’t? Growing up? My friend Tim’s family dogs could not be coerced into going into the room downstairs where his mom did sewing. If you tried to take them by the collar and lead them in there, they’d attack. Deer Hunting
One of the Michigan stations was looking for something for deer hunting season.
Any time you can hide an object or person on the site and have people search for it, it’s a homerun. The Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul does it with Easter eggs every year. Go and search section by section, Tickets, Lost & Found, Guest Services…and find an egg, click on it and get an entry in a draw for some pretty cool packages that they put together. The more you find, the more entries you get.
You could do that with deer. Hide deer around the site and declare that hunting season is officially open. “I hunted deer while I was on the bus to work.” “I hunted deer while I pretended to pay attention during a Zoom meeting about our TPS reports….”
