1) How many years have you been coming to Miami Music Week?
Five years ago was my very first Miami Music Week, so fifth year. This year was definitely my most exciting Miami Music Week. I had six parties, and a brand new single that came out.
2) What can you tell us about the single?
It's called, "No Future" featuring a really talented singer from the U.K. named Dyson. We wrote the song together about a year ago and I've kind of had it in my back pocket. I also have a bunch of collaboration records that I want to get out.
3) You've been involved with some really big songs, a lot of people only know you for your own music. I would think that a lot of people didn't know that you were involved with "Closer" by The Chainsmokers?
Yea, we wrote that song together on the tour bus last year, and actually I'm on tour with them again.
4) In the Dance radio format, it was a 20-week #1 record; the longest-running Dance radio airplay record of all time and it is also a huge Hot 100 Single. When you sat down to write the song with them, did you ever think it was going to be that big?
No, absolutely not. I knew that we had something special in our pockets. I knew that that the lyrics were really interesting, cool and honest, and I really loved the song. I knew that because of The Chainsmokers it would do something, but what happened next was like pretty crazy!
5) You've been doing music for a while where did it start for you?
I used to be a drummer in a band. I was a singer in a band. Then I was a singer in another band. I signed to Gene Simmons' record label when I was really young. I did a tour with KISS, the band. And then I started doing my own Dance records and that kind of led me to you know, DJ-ing and pursuing my own records.
6) All right, what's your favorite KISS song?
Probably "Detroit Rock City."
7) We're in Miami [Beach], a lot of people are trying to break into the business, if you could give one piece of advice to an up-and-coming artist, producer, DJ, writer, what would it be?
I would say lock yourself in the basement. Don't worry about playing shows. Don't worry about DJ-ing too much. Worry about making the best possible music you can, and trying to find your own voice, not just copying what everyone else is doing.
8) Is there an EP coming ... an album?
I have something like eight solo records -- a couple that I'm singing on them myself! They're all almost ready so we'll see. We might just release them one by one. I just signed to Ultra Records with my team, and you know, that's exciting! We'll just see how "No Future" goes and then go from there.
9) If you could collaborate with any artist, who would your dream collaboration be with?
Radiohead.
10) What's a hobby of yours?
Snowboarding.
