1) Where are you guys from?
We are both from Southern California.
2) You're both from So Cal, but you call yourself BRKLYN. How did you come up with the name and why do you spell it the way you spell it?
The meaning of it is Unity Makes Strength, which we thought was cool and the logo all caps was just iconic. It's hard to have a stance on this because we're not from there and we respect Brooklyn.
3) BRKLYN is Cameron and Cody. How did you guys meet?
We met in high school a long time ago. We played sports together. We were at the lunch tables one day when one of us was a freshman and one of us was a junior; we were talking about playing guitars, as we both play guitar, and we were talking about the bands that we were each in. I came from a small high school and we were playing at the House of Blues in Anaheim. We were the only two bands there. The peak of my high school career was opening for his band. We were in those bands for awhile and then we started writing together and with other people and from there we created BRKLYN.
4) Before BRKLYN, did you play in a band together?
Yes, we both played in a band called Eye Alaska that did a lot of touring and had a lot of success.
5) You've had a couple of songs out "Heart Of The City," "Can't Get Enough," "Steal Your Heart" and you did a song with Paul Oakenfold & Amba Shepherd, "U Are." Is there one of those that stand out to you?
"Steal Your Heart" because -- and it might sound bad saying this -- when we wrote that song we didn't necessarily think it was as good as it was or that it was going to get a big as it got, but it did well and got on the radio. That was our big moment, because it never seems to work out like that and it was our first signed and released record. It was interesting because we had all the radio play and all the streams before we even started playing any shows. So it was weird and cool. That song stands out for sure. And obviously doing the song with Paul Oakenfold was like a dream come true for us.
6) You have a new single out that features Jocelyn Alice, "I'm On Somethin'," What can you tell me about the song?
We were super-excited to do a song with Jocelyn. We wrote the song with her in a cabin in Lake Arrowhead and it was a cool experience that happened organically.
7) What was the writing session like in the cabin?
We vibed really well with her; I think we laughed more than we worked. She has the most contagious laugh and we just clicked and now we've done like six songs with her. We just grabbed a guitar and wrote for hours; she's just so talented. This song was effortless; we're happy about it and the production and we think it speaks for itself
8) With the both of you growing up and playing in bands who were some of your inspirations?
John Mayer, Bon Iver, Coldplay, Kanye. We like all kinds of music -- acoustic, rock, rap, movie scores ... lots of movie scores.
9) Growing up in bands and now part of a duo, if you were going to give a piece of advice to an upcoming artist, producer, remixer or writer, what would it be?
Seriously, if you feel it in your gut, you know that you can do it 100%. I know it sounds cheesy, but don't stop. It took us a long time; we started playing in bands when we were 12 and we kept thinking this one is going to sign us, this is one is going to happen. If you know you want it, put in the time. It's just like anything else. If you're not working, there is always some kid out there on YouTube who is, so if you think you put in enough, keep going because you haven't. There's always someone trying to beat you. It's like sports or the 10,000-hour rule, however you want to look at it. If I went to school for some many years, I would expect that I would be a successful doctor. If you take it serious and you care about it and you have the passion you can do it. I know I just got kind of deep...
10) You guys are residents at Hakkasan, are you guys doing a lot of touring?
We just signed with Paradigm and all that is starting to come together with supporting the record. This is our second year at Hakkasan; they are very good to us and we love it over there
