Carrie Underwood

Congrats to Carrie for releasing her new record today. I heard/saw her perform on Good Morning America this morning. She looked great and sounded good. But....was that Country music? Outside of the violin/fiddle player and her vocal gymnastics to sound Country.

Do you know what song she sang today? I think her current single would do well at Top 40 radio. It sounds like something Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears could cover and get away with. I have listened to a few cuts on Carrie's new album and they seem to have more of a pop feel to them. Which is not a bad thing, I guess.

The word country is so widely used now...and it seems like only George Jones is going off about it! It's good for money in the industry in general but must be discouraging for those acts who are really trying to stick to a country sound.

You're so right, Sky. What exactly is "Country" these days, anyway? Our format is becoming very pop-driven, if you think about it - just listen to Love and Theft, Gloriana, etc.

I don't remember the names of the songs that Carrie performed. I think one was the new single. The other sounded very similar and was about a name, I think. ????

And if George Jones is the only one thinking about the sound of country, will it continue in the pop/rock direction? Seems watered down.

All of these comments are rediculous. You are confusing a true country artist with the likes of pop star taylor swift. Carrie has a country backround but loves all music. Her new album has some great country only tracks with a lot of variety to boot. Country music is in continuous change but some of you like George live in the past. If country only played george jones type music the format would have died 20 years ago. What really bothers me and you all are right in a way is that country music has embraced the likes of taylor swift. What is that all about? She certainly has not brought young listeners to country radio because they actually listen to her songs on pop radio. Arena sales do not bring income to country radio. Her fan base requests on country radio but does not listen to it. Country radio has been dupped and no one cares but me.

They may call it country music, they may play it on country radio, and it may win all the trophies on the awards shows. But in my mind they are sacrificing all credibility in the process. In other words, don't expect people who know much about music to take it seriously.

Like pornography, it may be difficult to describe exactly what constitues country music, but most people know it when they see/hear it. And 99% of the drivel on country radio ain't country music.
