"Seasoned Talent" w/ side of cole slaw..

Post by thecheese » Wed Apr 20, 2011 2:48 pm

I browse through the jobs postings a few times a week, and see the same kinds of ads over and over.. people looking for 'seasoned talent' and someone with a 'track record'.. because lord knows what works in Davenport is going to be a grand slam in Atlanta.

Meanwhile terrestrial radio languishes in mediocrity as each station tries to copy the next with the same tired soundbites, and the same tired 'morning zoo/crew/show/blah' while PD's and GM's stand around and wonder why revenues are down across the board.

Standing on the outside, as a listener first, and a 'personality' second, it's evident that much of terrestrial radio is just an 'old boy's club'. They're not interested in talent, or actually engaging the listener. It's all about maximizing revenues.. how cheap can we get a syndicated show in here and how much can we squeeze our advertisers out of each hour.

I understand radio is a business.. but it used to be a business with a soul.

Now radio has about as much soul as Kenny G's jazz.

Well.. presumably, the reason some stations look for persons familiar with 'the lifestyle' of their target audience is in the hopes you'll be able to relate to the listener.

That way when 'T-Bag' calls in to ask for Lil Keke's "Big Rims" because he just scored a set of 22" spinners off CraigsList, you won't laugh and hang up on him.. but instead roll the 1:20 conversation into a tidy little 15 second intro into the requested track.

You go to work for one of the 24 hour format sat stations with liners written by a 4th grader delivered by the internet with a music log delivered by the Internet and 2 minutes a hour gladly given by the station owner who thinks he's delivering a good product on the air cause he's not paying a full staff anymore but he's got the computer expert on the phone telling him it's going to work perfect. What ever you call it "Jack" or "Bob" or "Ed" or "whatever" it's all bull and radio on the local level is looking for the quickest way to save a dollar to make a dime.
