Do Top 40 Bar Promos Work?

My PD is a little mixed on doing a bar promotion with a popular local bar because he says that bar promotions for Top 40 stations don't generally "work" I disagree with this because I think that our audience consists of more than 16 year old girls. (Probably why we play insurance ads between songs)
Anyway is this a general consensus or is this just him?

From an entertainment standpoint, keep the music within the crossover of your playlist and what you'd hear at the club. (If there's no cross over or too little, you shouldn't be at that club) Remember your target demo. Stay away from drinking games or shots as prizes, etc. It's too easy for someone to get out of hand anyway, you don't want your fingerprints on it. Get some of your other clients to put up a few non-competing prizes that are complimentary to your audience.

MAKE SURE PROMOTIONS AND PROGRAMING HAVE THE REINS OF THE EVENT NOT SALES!
Sales is there to do what they do. Write the contract.
