Have you seen any of these internet station making a difference? I’m talking about internet station with no terrestrial broadcast antenna to assist it.

The few talk radio type internet station I know of really don’t make an impact and the few music type stations have less followers.

Apple’s iTunes gets better results from listeners than these internet stations do. I’m just curious, are they doing anything worth talking about?

Hi there. I operate an internet radio station. We have rather solid numbers. Being able to access our station on iTunes radio has helped a great deal. We play Blues which is an often rejected or not aired format on terrestrial radio. Listeners of the genre know to go to internet radio to find what they are looking for. I think it really just depends on the format, how it's marketed, and what listening capabilities you have for the listener.

bluesintheburg - I understand what you are saying but it doesn't answer the question. "Do people really listen to internet radio station" At my terrestrial station (which is rural) and we offer streaming audio, we get about 12K listeners a week. Seeing anybody in the world can listen, these numbers are not impressive.

I know the future is streaming but I keep thinking we are still a few years away before it takes a hold of things.

I think internet radio is still rather new. With terrestrial radio a station has a budget to spend on marketing and promotions. As with any other business, without these two facets your station is going to fail. Perhaps one issue with internet radio is HOW exactly to attract listeners to your station. If there is good content, people will listen regardless of whether it is terrestrial or internet. Again internet radio is still new but I do think it is where the radio industry is heading.

Internet Radio creates a different kind of audience, plus there are zillions of Internet stations.

My internet station, I do as a hobby, reaches about 1,000 listeners a day. Not so impressive, compared to an FM station. But, if you remember that 1,000 listeners x 365 days = 365,000 people, the Internet station starts to seem more impressive. Especially since I create mine on my living room couch. The overhead is... well, quite less. Internet Radio is not the same thing, but that is the advantage. And, my station is much more music oriented, which my fans just love!

I agree there are zillions of Internet stations. Anybody can start one up.

From a business point of view, it’s not viable. The reason is: it’s too hard to lock a market by means of some forum of measurement. (age, location) It has already been proven that even with a good/popular host, you still get a very small fraction of the populous.

You can’t go to company and say I get these many people in this area buy ads from me, because you get listeners all over the world.

I’ve been studying many different streaming websites and the one thing they seem to all lack is: promotions of their product. The very few that have promoted, do fairly well, but I’m talking millions of dollars in promotions.

Celebrity podcast/streaming do OK but their name alone doesn’t cut it. Most of them don’t have sponsors either.

It seem streaming would be good for a terrestrial station as a tool to reach their listeners and give them another way to listen to their favorite shows but will never be a solid staple to attract listeners.

The difference between terrestrial and streaming is: the selection a person has in a given area. With terrestrial you have only so many stations and you gain listeners because of lack of choice but with streaming you have the world.

As far as “Do people really listen to internet radio station” I think for their favorite shows, but nothing more.

I disagree Corneo,
I am am Oldies station owner and we have been asked to broadcast live from Motown studio's ( that was May 9th 2013 ) and since then we have added on a television show to our station and have interviewed some HUGE names like Pat Boone , Bobby Vinton, The Rascals , FireFall, Ambrosia , and many many more . . . . .
Unless you know about Oldies you may not recognize some of those names but they are legends.

So in respect to the comment about only their favorite shows and nothing more . . . . .I believe you're wrong. Soon FM radio will be a thing of the past and internet radio will be the new norm , it is already being put into vehicles.

I think it depends on the drive of the station owner. Do you always want to be a bedroom DJ, broadcasting to your buddies and pals ? Or do you want to ( like myself ) take it to the next level and get noticed ? We have had press releases , major celebrities, Motown appearances , and now we are on the path towards national recognition . Thats where THIS internet ONLY station is going ,

We are legally licensed and doing everything as it should be done and not being satisfied with just our buddies & pals listening. We have major amounts of hits on our site daily.

My advice to those just starting , go for the gusto ! Dont be comfortable until you reach where you want to be with your station. You may have to sink a chunk of money into it to get it going in the direction that you want just as I did, but , ask yourself , is the end result worth it ? Do you have the drive and the professionalism to take your station to the next level ? Can you make a decision to follow a certain path and not drift away from that path ?

There are steps that you need to consider before achieving in internet radio some of the things that are indeed possible if you really want it.

Just my humble opinion on the path that internet radio is on.

(As far as “Do people really listen to internet radio station” I think for their favorite shows, but nothing more.) was based on many people go to sleep listening to their radios, but not their computers. In other words, people turn off their computers when they leave them but not their radios.

"Celebrity podcast/streaming do OK but their name alone doesn’t cut it. " was based on celebrities like: Penn Jillette, Adam Carolla. Do OK, but really don't make money and use their podcast as a way to push their live shows and keep their fan base going.

I never see FM being phased out. This country needs away to get messages out to the public in emergencies and all cars carry FM radio's. (common sense)

I wish you the best in your goals for your station and I hope you prove me wrong. The one thing I do know is: If there is away to make a profit on streaming, major radio companies would be all over it.

There is only one question to ask:

Is your podcast or streaming station (it's NOT radio) making a profit?

I've yet to see someone that could honestly answer "yes" to this.
