Doc: I know your wife is a dermatologist, so I'd like to know what her opinion is about tanning beds and skin cancer. Thanks. - Anonymous

Anon: I don't need to ask my wife, Darnell, about her opinion of the relationship between tanning beds and skin cancer, particularly melanoma, which is the worst form of skin cancer - click here for some disgusting photos. The reason I don't need to ask her is because she performs skin cancer surgeries just about every day and has made many comments about the increasing number of melanoma cases among people who use tanning beds...particularly among young girls who, for whatever reason, find it necessary to bake themselves under the cancer lights.

There is no redeeming value for tanning beds...nothing, zilch, nada, zip. If you don't believe me, read some articles in this search about the relationship between tanning beds and melanoma..

In my opinion, tanning beds should be called "Melanoma/Infectious Disease Beds," which may help dissuade some people from using them. Tanning beds not only increase the risk of melanoma, but they are also the source of many disgusting, gross, and sickening infectious skin-related diseases people can contract from wallowing in other people's disease-laden body fluids left behind on the bed. ("OK, Susie, it's your turn to jump on the tanning bed and wallow around in other people's disease-laden and infectious body fluids they left behind. Have fun!")

Doc: That was awesome. I remember Dr. Dirk Elston giving a lecture last year about young kids hooking up to tanning beds during high school lunch breaks and not only getting a tan, but also STDs. - Dr. JC

Dr. JC: Thanks for writing. It's too bad that more people don't know the problems associated with tanning beds.

It might be depending on machines. Some of the tanning beds might be low in class, so they could cause some skin damage. Anyway, the UV could be adjusted before lying inside so it could be safe for skin. - Anonymous

Anon: Sorry. There isn't one tanning bed on the planet that is "safe for skin."

Doc: I thought you might be interested in this article I found about tanning beds. I think it's interesting that the Chicago Tribune calls them "Cancer Beds." Here is the link for the article - Anonymous

Anon: Hey, thanks for the information. It's an interesting article. I think the term "Cancer Beds" more accurately describes the devices. What a great name and I'll use that in the future.
