Singer-songwriter, Joshua Radin has recorded seven studio albums: "We Were Here", "Simple Times", "The Rock and The Tide", "Underwater", "Wax Wings" and "Onward and Sideways." And his newest studio album called "The Fall." "High And Low" is the first single out now from the collection.
1. Please tell us about your first single from the new album, "High and Low." What was the inspiration behind this song?
"High and Low" is a love song about my ex-girlfriend. We had plenty of ups and downs and I wanted her to know that I would love her whether we were up or down.
2. I understand that you took on the role of producer for the first time on "The Fall." What was that like for you? Why did you decide to take that on for this collection?
I have worked with several great producers in the past and each one of them had a different way of working. So I learned a lot from each of them. I think I took a bit of each producer and came up with my own way of working. I just hope my fans feel I made the right choices. I had such a great time in the studio.
3. Your music has been featured in so many films and TV shows. Can you remember the first moment you heard one of your songs on something that you were watching? What did that feel like? Do you still love hearing your music on them?
It was the first song I ever wrote actually. It's called "Inter" and the TV show "Scrubs" used it in a very emotional scene. I remember when it aired thinking, maybe I could try this for a living? I still can't believe this is my life.
4. Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
I always loved music, and my parents played the Beatles in the house all the time. By the time I was nine years old I knew.
5. What if anything has surprised you about the music industry? What do you think has been your biggest challenge? And what do you think has come really naturally to you?
My biggest challenge has been learning how to live half my time on the road, and the other half at home. It's a constant adjustment. I love this life of travel but many of my friends and family members have a difficult time truly understanding my life. So many musicians I meet have been musicians their entire lives. So when I meet them, I always feel like I'm a bit of a fraud, like I'm not really one of them. And everyone else in my life sees me as a musician, so I feel like I don't really fit in anywhere, if that makes sense?
6. Who are some of your favorite artists and what bands continue to inspire you and your music? Who would you still love to work with in the future?
Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Young. Classic songwriters who know how to cut right through you with their lyrics. They make the world make more sense to me. I'd love to work with any of them.
7. How do you think your music has grown through the years?
I think of my albums like journals that I keep. Each chapter of my life becomes an album. Each song is a true experience taken from my personal life.
8. What has changed about the way you create music?
I wouldn't say my music has changed so much, it's more about the lyrical content. I still play very quietly and sing with a bit of a whisper.
9. When you aren't performing, working in the studio, what do you like to do for fun? How do you unwind from it all?
I like to read, and most of all I like to walk around cities and take photographs. That's how I get to know each city. Then I'm always looking for a great restaurant. On tour, it's always about food.
10. At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
When people write me and tell me that they use my music for comfort, that means the most to me. Like when a parent dies, or they are going through something very emotional. High or low. Their wedding, their first date, insomnia. Any time I can be of help to anyone. That's why I keep doing this.
