BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
- Promo/ night show intern at WDCG/Raleigh
- Nights/APD/MD WABB/Mobile (RIP)
- Nights/APD/Weekends WHQC/Charlotte
- PD/air talent WAEV/Savannah
1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
A MASTER Class in how a radio station should be run, thanks to Randi West and Brody at WDCG. My time as an intern in Raleigh really laid the ground work for how I would look at our industry as I continued down this path. The lessons I learned there still guide me today.
2) How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
Incredibly BUSY. Two, even three stations in some cases, within the same format.
3) Are You wearing more " hats" than you have in the past?
I don't think you can do what we do today and NOT wear a few. Not only am I the APD/ MD for Mix, but I do the same duties on our sister Top 40 KZZP. Double everything is a way of life for me.
4) "Local Local Local" has always been radio's mantra. How do you keep your station visible and involved in the community?
We have an amazing staff that really bear hugs Phoenix. Mathew Blades in the Morning kicks it off by being super local with his content. They even have an annual contest called "Battle Of The Burbs," that's laid out "March Madness" style. Burbs rally to move through the bracket to ultimately win a concert in their city by a Mix artist. Kristina Kage is on middays, and while she is tracked, she has family that lives here and is HYPER local. She even pulls headlines from local papers and incorporates them into the show. Finally we have Lady La at night. She was an AM drive host for a decade and brings her star power and her knowledge of local happenings to her show. You can find her every weekend at a new PHX restaurant, showing off the food on social.
5) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Not having enough hours in the day...or iced coffee.
6) What artist would we be surprised to find on your personal playlist?
Kenny Chesney. My dad is a huge Jimmy Buffett fan. That's all he really had on when I was a kid. I'd say Kenny is my generation's Jimmy.
7) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
Justin Timberlake...would love an hour with him.
8) Who were your mentors? Who would you say has influenced your career the most?
Randi West, Geller (Now Ross Hayes), Chris Michaels, Boomer, Mat Mitchell, Steve Geofferies, Tommy Chuck, Jack Spade. I like to think there wasn't one who influenced me "more," I think they all have, and continue to contribute to the programmer/talent, and even the person I am today.
9) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
If you LOVE what you do, you'll never work a day in your life.
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Never say NO. Be open to learn anything...makes you more valuable.
Bonus Questions
