1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
Educational and busy! My first job came because I wouldn't go away after my internship, but my plan worked and they brought me on part time, and then full time in 2011. In my time there, I was afternoon drive on a Country station, voice tracked nights on the Top 40 station, voice tracked for a Country station for the company outside of the market, scheduled daily music, production, trained and managed the part time employees and even took care of the responsibilities for an AM Talk/Sports station for a while.
2) What led you to a career in radio?
I won't lie, it was a fluke that I fell into radio. I was just trying to graduate college and needed an internship ASAP! A friend of mine who worked at the local radio station said I should intern there, it would be super easy. My first week there I voiced a spot. The first time I heard the commercial air, I knew I found my calling and never looked back.
3) What is your favorite part of the job?
They pay me to talk and listen to music for a living! Plus, I don't get bored because things are always changing. The music changes, going out for broadcasts, always something new to learn and I'm always meeting and talking with new people.
4) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Going to bed early. I mean, it's really difficult to force yourself to go to bed at 8pm, especially during the summer when it's still light out!
5) What artist would we be surprised to find on your personal playlist?
Elvis Presley! I even keep Elvis cassettes in my car...and yes, I'm aware I said cassettes.
6) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Mike Jones on DC 101 out of Washington DC. He's entertaining, knows the music inside and out and just all-around sounds great. I listen to his show whenever I can.
7) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
Ed Sheeran. He is incredibly talented, I love all his songs and he seems like he would be a fun guy to have in.
8) Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
Hands down mid to late 90's! I was huge fan of Blink 182, The Offspring, Green Day and yea, I'll say it... The Spice Girls!
9) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I like doing artsy crafty projects. Most of them turn out looking like a toddler did them, but it just makes the ones that actually turn out ok, that much better.
10) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
There is always something new to learn. I'd like to become a PD one day, so I have a drive to learn everything I can from anyone who is willing to teach it.
Bonus Questions
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
What didn't I want to be? I wanted to be a veterinarian until I realized how much science was involved, then an Olympic ice skater until I learned you don't sing the song you're skating to, (BTW I can't actually sing or skate), when I got a little older I wanted to be a corrections officer, then a police officer in the K9 unit. Thankfully I found radio!
