APD/Mornings - KCRZ/Visalia, CA (02-Present)1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first job was a Board-Op for the Turlock High School football team, and Bob Kingsley's "American Country Countdown On Record!" My influences include the legendary KFRC, Doctor Don Rose, and FM 104 KHOP's Rob Sherwood.
2) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I would have to say a Carnie...running the Himalaya and yelling "You wanna go faster?!?!?!" Or, I might be some type of music or commercial Producer and doing live sound .
3) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Country! And now that I am getting older, Classic Rock! (Did I just say that?)
4) How do you position the station musically and why did you choose this direction?
When we signed on in 2002, we were totally 80's with 70's and 90's mixed in (Jack before it was Jack). Then in the last year we have morphed into a full-fledged Hot AC. 80's 90's and currents, all under the moniker "Non Stop Hits!" It's fun! I love it!
5) What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Re-invention. We need to constantly reinvent. Don't let the station sound stale. Keep up with the trends, but do your own thing too. Stay away from the cookie cutter, use your own ideas and when possible steal some, but put your own spin on it.
6) How do you stay in tune with your audience?
Talk to as many of your P1's as possible!
7) Describe your weekly music meeting ... a) what is the process when you listen to new music? b) approximately how important by percentage is gut, research, sales, video play, and chart position when determining the status of a record?
We use music research through our website, charts, Hot AC, Top 40, Rhythmic, and throw in a lot of gut! Did I mention that I need music service? Call me! (559) 553-1500.
8) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
Z-100/New York. Great programming and Dave Foxx's Imaging rocks! Thanks to our Prod God Mike O' Neil for getting me to listen to Z-100. I love it! KDND in Sacramento is sounding great, and 95.1 KHOP/Modesto sounds good too!
9) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
Nickelback "Rockstar," (I have yet to get tired of that song), Daughtry "Over You" (It rocks!) and Brad Paisley "Online," funny video.
10) Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Programming a market leading station...with a fun air staff!
