KMSO '06-'07- Mainstream AC - PD
WGER '07 to present- Hot AC - PD1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first job was in Sidney Montana, which is an oil well town that went bust on the North Dakota boarder (about 3000 people). The station was in the basement of a hotel, and looked like a bomb shelter. Needless to say, I got the weather conditions wrong daily.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
The defining moment was when I didn't want to go to college after high school, and I thought it would be cool to be a DJ. I went to Brown Institute in Minneapolis and the rest is history.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
I would... I've had some great experiences in radio, and I have had a chance to work with some really creative people and that makes it all worth it.
4) In today's world of multi-tasking and wearing many hats, how do you find time to show prep and what sources do you use?
Some days I get only about 10 minutes, but I like to get on my computer before I go into work and surf... MSN, The Drudge Report, and TMZ for anything I could use later in the day.
5) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Rock. Sometimes you just have to put in some Metallica on the way home after a long day...
6) How do you feel terrestrial radio competes with the satellite radio and Internet these days?
I still think that terrestrial radio does a better job because it's local and in touch with the market.
7) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
Utility guy! The guy who does a weekend shift or two, and also helps out with production and promotions. That would go a long way, not only with WGER but the other stations in our cluster.
8) Name the artist/act (living or dead) you'd love to meet and why?
Rush. My favorite band since I first heard "Moving Pictures."
9) What's the best concert you've been to so far this year and why?
Wow, I haven't been to many this year... but I would have to say Live, with Collective Soul and Big Head Todd. Live is one of those bands that I've always wanted to see.
10) As you look back over your career ... any regrets? Missed opportunities?
Well there was that job at McDonalds. I'm betting that I could be moved up to the fryer by now. No regrets or missed opportunities. Everything happens for a reason.
Bonus Questions
1) What was the first song or full-length release you purchased?
My first album was Gene Simmon's solo album. My first CD was Stevie Ray Vaughn-"In Step."
2) Tell us what music we would find on your I-Pod right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
G.B. Leighton "Come Alive." A Minneapolis band that is ready to go big (reminds me of great times with friends). Nickelback "Photograph." What a timeless song! Sammy Hagar "Mas Tequila." Gets me in a party mood when I hear it!
3) What "reality show" could you see yourself appearing on and why?
I keep thinking that someday, someone should make a reality show about a radio station. A day in, day out, following all the different characters would be great for ratings... no one would believe it! I know I could do that one.
