Please outline your radio career so far:
KWSS (HOT 97.7)/SAN JOSE, CA 1993-1995
WFBC (B93.7)/GREENVILLE, SC 1995-1998
WEZB (B97)/NEW ORLEANS, LA 1998-1999
WKQI (Q95.5)/DETROIT, MI 1999-2002
WWKX (HOT 106)/PROVIDENCE, RI 2002-2003
KBBY (B95.)/OXNARD/VENTURA, CA 2003-PRESENT1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first radio job was a research operator for KWSS in San Jose, CA. Now my first full time gig was at B93.7 in Greenville, SC. At that time, Rob Wagman was the Program Director. Even though Pete Manriquez and Bob Perry gave me an opportunity at Hot 97.7 as a part-timer, Rob Wagman has influenced my career to this day. I learned so much from him that I wouldn't be in the position that I'm in if it wasn't for his influences.
2) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I would have been a music teacher. In college, I was a Music Major (concentration saxophone) and a Radio/TV minor. I changed majors after I realized that I couldn't make any money as a saxophonist. Now I realize I can't make any money as a radio personality either.
3) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Romeo at Z-100. This guy is one of the best! He's very passionate about radio and he's one of the most talented jocks in the country. I wish more people in the radio industry had his passion.
4) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
KROQ. Need I say more?
5) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Rhythmic and Alternative.
6) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
I have the following artists in my car: (Be careful) - Gnarls Barkley,
System of a Down, Stone Sour, The Dixie Chicks (I can't believe I said
that), T.I, Fergie and She Wants Revenge. As you can tell, I like all kinds
of music.
7) What do you do in your spare time?
I play a LOT of golf.
8) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
One of the most rewarding community events that we do every year is our "Prom Dress Relief Drive." Every year, we giveaway about 400 prom dresses to girls who are unable to afford them.
9) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
I would love to have my own Promotions Director. These days, clusters share the same Promotions Director and a lot of things fall through the cracks. It would be nice to have one all to myself.
10) How do you handle a confrontation between two people on your airstaff?
I get a boxing ring and let them go at it!
Bonus Questions
1) Where do you see the industry and yourself five years from now?
If radio continues to stay local, they will do fine. That will improve the pool for up & coming talent. As for myself, I would like to continue programming, but I'd also like to teach Radio/TV at a local college.
2) What was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you at a remote?
At this one remote in Detroit, a listener thought it would be great to give me a pair of silk tiger skin underwear. That was so embarrassing. Everybody at the station joked about it for weeks.
3) Cat or Dog person?
I would only have an animal if it paid rent.
4) What's your favorite fast food?
Jack In the Box tacos. I love that kangaroo meat!
5) You just won the lotto and you have your boss on the line. What's the first thing that you would say?
To my GM, "Guess what?...I'm your new boss!!!"
