NAME:Travis RoyceTITLE:PDSTATIONS:AC KMGW, Country KWYYMARKET:Casper, WYCOMPANY:Clear ChannelBORN:May 3rd, 1977-San Diego CaliforniaRAISED:Denver/Seattle
Please outline your radio career so far:
KTWO/(1030-A)/2001-2002, KTRS/2002-2004, KRVK (107.9)/2004 - Present.
1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
I started doing overnights on KTWO-A in 2001. It's a Talk station that gave me about six hours over the weekend to do a Classic Country show. That turned into a copy writing gig for our six station cluster, which turned into traffic, more air work, etc...My biggest influence's were Uncle Nasty from KBPI in Denver, and Lewis & Floorwax from "The Fox" in Denver. They're all I ever listened to.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I was broke and needed a job. It quit being a job and became a career when I realized I was made for this. Nothing's better than radio, and I hate real jobs.
3) What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Where are the next generation of jocks and programmers going to come from? We keep eliminating jobs with technology, which is to be expected, but we've also made it harder to make a living in the business with options like cheap voice tracking and such.
4) How have the recent FCC regulations impacted the way you program your music and the station's dialogue on the air? What are your feelings about these recent changes??
I'm gonna write a song called "FU-FCC." I think that about says it all.
5) What is the biggest change that you'd like to see happen in the business?
It'd be nice to see it become less corporate and more personal.
6) Just about every market has a station flipping to "Jack," "Bob," "Max," etc. What are your thoughts on this new format? Will it go the distance? Or is it just a fad?
It depends on how it's done. If you make it all about the listener, have a deep
(1,000-5,000) playlist, and refresh that playlist once a quarter or so, you'll do good. If you're playing the same 500 songs constantly, it'll get tired, and you'll lose your audience.
7) Name the artist/act (living or dead) you'd love to meet and why?
Stevie Ray Vaughan. The man took the Blues and tore up the airwaves, and no one can play the way he did.
8) What's the best concert you've been to so far this year and why?
BB King...C'mon, it's BB King!
9) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
That would be KBPI in Denver. I grew up on it!
10) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Assume nothing, and take nothing for granted.
Bonus Questions
How did you get your on-air name?
Our mid-day guy said Travis Royce is a stupid name, and that "T-Roy" would sound much better...I don't agree, but now I'm stuck with it
Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
I've had a couple different stalkers in my day, but the weirdest was the guy who offered me his wife. He said she talks about me all the time, and she won't shut up until I take her to bed. They followed me everywhere I went, showed up to every event, and even put on a show for me at the stripper joint.
I'd get calls most nights at my home, and finally my wife wanted me to put a restraining order on them. It didn't quite come to that, but they were definitely weird people ...but it's good to know that you're loved.
What's been your biggest disappointment in Radio today?
The groupies. I don't like dudes sending me stuff.
