Please outline your radio career so far:
Laser 101.3 Rochester, MN 4/93 - 4/96
Metro Networks - Milwaukee, WI 1/97 - 1/98
KDAT - Cedar Rapids, IA 2/98 - 6/98
KRNA - Cedar Rapids, IA 6/98 - 10/01
KEZO - Omaha, NE 10/01 - Current1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
Overnights and morning show at Laser 101.3 in Rochester, MN. I really had no influences, but I was determined to be a "shock jock."
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I never meant to be in radio. I got kicked out of Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota and I was sitting at my parent's house with no job or goals. I saw a commercial for Brown Institute, which told me I could be a Disc Jockey and I thought, "Why not?"
3) How do you position the station musically and why did you choose this direction?
Z92 is pure rock and that is what we like to do. STAR targets women and work places. So it's pretty cool to be a Music Director for both ends of the format spectrum.
4) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
I listen. It's pretty simple. Listen to what is hot and to what your listeners are trying to tell you.
5) Where do you see the industry and yourself five years from now?
We are going to have a lot to compete with, but if Z92 and STAR stay local we are going to be just fine. I am not sure where I am going to be in five years, but I can honestly say that I would love to stay in the Journal Broadcast family.
6) How have the recent FCC regulations impacted the way you program your music and the station's dialogue on the air? What are your feelings about these recent changes?
There has been no impact programming. I don't think we ever had anything to worry about in the past or in the future. The FCC has always been around and if we let them affect us to the point of being scared to play certain songs, we are going to lose. So we just do what we think is right.
7) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Jason Mraz. Isn't it funny how I can go from Disturbed to Jason Mraz? Mraz has unbelievable writing skills and then his voice just brings those songs to a place that no one else could.
8) What makes your station or market unique? How does this compare to other markets or stations you have worked at?
We have one of the best morning shows in the Country (Todd-N-Tyler) and I am impressed with all of the support they get from our company. Journal really shows its appreciation for their employees. For the first time in radio, I don't feel like a number in a huge corporation. When I contribute something I know the company stands up and notices.
9) What is a typical day like in your position?
Get in a 7a, and start scheduling music for Z92 and STAR. I do about a half hour of production. Go on the air at 10:30a, and get back to music scheduling at 3p.
10) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Don't let the everyday annoying things get to you. No matter what industry you are in, it is not perfect.
Bonus Questions
Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
"Win A Date With Jessica Dol." When I was on a morning show in Cedar Rapids, IA, we wanted to get some publicity for me since I was fairly new. But, a couple days before we started the promotion, I hooked up with a new guy who wasn't happy about it. Let's just say, I ticked off some listeners [who] really wanted more than just a date. Does this sound egotistical?
What is your favorite TV show?
"24"
Do you have any musical guilty pleasures?
NSync!
Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
Yes, I've called the cops before - that's the furthest I can get in to it.
What singer/performer/artist really inspires you and why?
Tori Amos. She just has no rules.
You're stuck on a deserted island and you only have 5 CDs with you. What are they?
Live - Throwing Copper; Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists; Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.; Jason Mraz - Live at Eagles Ballroom, Nickelback - All The Right Reasons.
