1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
First job: AM/FM combo in Have De Grace, MD. I had to run both stations, and I learned early about timing. I met a guy named JJ Hitman Mckay who taught me everything.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"??
When my father said, "You know every word to every song on the radio, but you can't remember anything on your math test!"
3) What makes your station or market unique? How does this compare to other markets or stations you have worked at?
We are 35 minutes out of Dallas. So we have to be local, even though we know our people go to Dallas. We don't ignore the "Big D," but if it's happening in Collin County we are on it. I had the same thing at WSTW in Wilmington Delaware when we were in Philly's backyard.
4) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
Everything from research to asking people at the gym what's in there I-Pod.
5) Do you have any musical guilty pleasures?
The Carpenter's, "Top of the World." I was young and needed the money.
6) How do you handle a confrontation between two people on your airstaff?
Well since it's hard to find Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots anymore. I try to get the "I's" to become a "We."
7) In your opinion, what is the greatest song ever that never made it as a hit?
The entire CD of Jude Cole's "Start The Car."
8) How often do you do remotes and which work best for the station?
I do a ton. What we can offer that all other forms of radio can't is knowing and meeting your Audience, shaking hands, and giving out stuff. Man, it still works!
9) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Pierre Roberre of WMMR in Philly. He's just the best at putting people and music Together.
10) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
As corny as it sounds, "Be yourself." Don't be perfect or be better than anyone [else.] People will know.
