NAME:JJ MorganTITLE:PDSTATIONS:KFBZ 105.3 THE BUZZMARKET:Wichita, KSCOMPANY:EntercomBORN:6/7/60 Omaha, NERAISED:Omaha, NE (GO BIG RED!!!)
Please outline your radio career so far:
Lot of places, a lot of adventure and success, currently PD of Entercom's Hot AC in Wichita, KFBZ (105.3 The Buzz).
1) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Absolutely, but with one change, that being the discovery and education about computers and our industry at a MUCH younger age!
2) What is the biggest change that you'd like to see happen in the business?
The absolute biggest change I'd like to see is in regards to staffing, as people really are the key on-air. Sure, it's an old-skool thought, but true!
3) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
Fortunately, I'm young at heart and mind so I watch MTV, BET, Fuse, plus stay in touch with MySpace.
4) How have the recent FCC regulations impacted the way you program your music and the station's dialogue on the air? What are your feelings about these recent changes?
All I can say is that we've bought our own personal rain forest for all the trees we've been killing for the paper.
5) Besides your own, what format would you like to program and why?
Strangely enough, I'd like to have one more crack at Top 40. Many of the things we do are Top-40 based, and when you add in the excitement, the "now factor", that'd be cool!
6) What has been the best performing record on the station so far this year?
Hmmm...I think that Daniel Powter song is the one...how much have I spun that?
7) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
Gee, where do I start? In reality, a full-time Webmaster who can also fill-in on air when needed, plus an extra jock. (I currently have 1 1/2 employees).
8) Describe the relationship you have with your fellow co-workers? How do you motivate your staff to do better? How do they motivate you?
With an inexperienced 11/2 person staff reporting to me, I have to be a teacher, which is something that I really enjoy! And I'm a "lead by example" guy, as I do practice what I preach. How can I expect my staff to do it if I don't?
9) Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
Best-In Omaha at SWEET 98, we gave away your personal customized porta-potty for one of our huge Sweetstock concerts. Worst-in the pre-Ron Parker days at KKFR (POWER 92) in Phoenix, we actually gave away 10 pound bags of potatoes for Thanksgiving weekend, while the other two Top 40 outlets, KZZP and KOY-FM threw out nutty amounts of money. And the funny thing is...it was a scream to do, and definitely worth laughing at in retrospect.
10) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
It absolutely has to be Woofstock, in conjunction with the Kansas Humane Society, a huge outdoor fundraiser at Sedgwick County Park. It's fun and rewarding too, knowing that close to 15,000 homeless animals are the benefits of the event annually.
Bonus Questions
Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Currently, Kelly Urich, PM Drive for Top 40 KMXV in Kansas City-one of the best in the business!
What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
Panic! At the Disco "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies," Jessica Simpson "A Public Affair", Nelly Furtado "Promiscuous."
