1) What Got You Interested In Radio?
I would listen to Howard Stern in the car with my mom on the old WBCN on the ride to school. At the time I was fat and with braces and I was pretty sure that the only way I would ever get to see a girl naked is by being on the air. I was right.
2) Who do you consider your radio mentors?
Spencer from KJEE was huge! He took me under his wing! Steve Reynolds, even though my station couldn't afford a consultant, I always listened to him at Morning Show Bootcamp.
3) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I just refused to take no for an answer. The moment I realized I had made it was when I was a guest on the Toucher & Rich show. I love that show! It was my absolute favorite and to be on it was awesome.
4) Who were your early influences?
Howard Stern, Nick Carter, Opie and Anthony, Timon & Pumba. And the movie "Airheads."
5) How are you using new music technologies to work with the music you program on your station, in production, and in your personal life?
All my stations use video. You have to use video and YouTube to win the game. If someone says, "Listen to this" that's just boring. If someone says check out this video then I will. Radio needs to get out of the mentally from the 1970's. Get rid of your fake voices and Hawaiin T-shirts.
6) How have music file sharing services, affected the way you program to your audience?
They haven't. People don't come to radio for breaking new music anymore. And that makes me sad.
7) What should radio be doing now to secure a role in the future of the ever-changing media landscape?
Learn all you can and never stop learning. Just because you don't like the change doesn't mean it won't have an effect on you. You can't be like an ostrich and bury your head in the sand.
8) How does satellite radio or Internet radio compare to what we're doing on the commercial side?
They are way more innovative... but they also have more money and education (I think). A lot of our sites are cookie cutter and boring. It is not really that exciting to have just the weather and the rock girl of the day.
9) What long-term role do you see HD radio playing in the future?
I don't think it will. But I also never thought that Netflix would work take off either?
10) What is your favorite part of the job?
Making fun of people.
Bonus Questions
1) What can we be doing with our station web sites to better our stations as a whole?
Keep them up to date. You will absolutely lose a listener forever if you say "check this out on our web site" and it isn't there!
2) What are your three favorite industry web sites?
All Access, FMQB, and the Morning Mouth.
3) Why would someone listen to your station instead of listening to music on their iPod?
Locality and being topical. If we lose those battles we are screwed.
