1) What Got You Interested In Radio?
I was born into it! My dad was in radio. I used to go into the studio with him and that's when I fell in love with radio!
2) What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always wanted to do radio. I had to wait until I was 14 to get an FCC license (remember those?), so when I hit 14 I hit the airwaves.
3) What is it about your station that you feel really makes it cut through?
At Sophie, we try to go a step beyond what others in the market are doing by giving the listener a once in a lifetime experience. A few weeks back John Mayer was in town. We not only gave away an autographed guitar, but John Mayer gave that listener a personal guitar lesson!
4) How much leeway do you give your jocks to talk between records?
We have a pretty seasoned staff. They know the ins and out's and how to communicate the message, so we have the all leeway we want (within reason) LOL!
5) How do you prep yourself for your radio shift?
I try to keep up on all Pop culture. I force myself to watch shows like "Glee," "American Idol" and "Dancing With The Stars" because I know our audience is watching them. And I remind myself of that every time I want to cut my ears off when watching some of these shows.
6) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
Katy Perry "Peacock," Cee-lo Green "Forget You," and One eskimO "Kandi."
7) Which new artists do you expect to still be playing in five years?
Lady Gaga. I think she'll continue to evolve and keep us all interested.
8) Favorite artist you have met?
No Doubt was cool, but I really got tongue tied the first time I met Melissa Etheridge because I had loved her work for so many years.
9) Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
OY! I've had it all. Letters from the women's prison with lipstick impressions on them, to a big envelope of dried dog crap sent to the station. People are nuts!
10) What's the best piece of advice anyone's ever given you? The worst?
Not to take yourself too seriously. I learned early how 'cool' people think you are after they learn you're on the radio. Not feeding into that, and realizing that everyone's job is just that. It's what they do. Teachers should be much 'cooler' than DJ's.
Bonus Questions
1) What was the biggest gaffe you've made on air?
I got my hand slapped back when Richard Marx had just come out with "Don't Mean Nothing". I said something about how he "use to go by Dick...but he didn't want to leave the world with Dick Marx." My PD came in from lunch and said he about drove off the road laughing, but if I did it again I'd be fired.
