"Can't Remember to Forget You" is the latest track from Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira. It is from her upcoming fourth English and overall tenth studio album, slated for release on March 25th. Released on January 13th via RCA Records and Sony Latin Iberia, the song features vocals by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. It was co-written by Shakira, Rihanna, John Hill, Tom "Kid Harpoon" Hull, Daniel Ledinsky and Erik Hassle. It is an up-tempo new wave track that incorporates elements of reggae.
Shakira explains, "You know, we're both from the Caribbean so I always thought we had that common ground, but this song is pretty reggae," noting it has a rock sound that she feels Rihanna also embodied. "I honestly thought it would never happen... She heard the record and she loved it and she said she was onboard and I was the happiest girl alive."
The pop singer rose to prominence in Latin America in 1996 with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos and then Dónde Están los Ladrones? in 1998. She entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service in 2001, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 in 2005, the latter of which spawned the best-selling song of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010), received critical praise but suffered from limited promotion. Her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 550 million views, its music video is the eighth most-watched video on YouTube.
As of now, Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold a total of 125 million records worldwide, over 70 million albums and 55 million singles. Her U.S. album sales stand at 9.9 million.
In addition to new music, Shakira will return to "The Voice" on February 24th with guest mentor Miranda Lambert joining her team. Since 2013, she has served as a coach on the show, having appeared in two of its six seasons.
