As Adele proved with the unprecedented, multiple Grammy winning success of 21 a few years ago, sometimes the enduring emotions of a singer/songwriter's heartbreak can inspire songs that can move the world, heal scarred hearts and change lives. A few years after early label interest led Alexis Keegan down a lighthearted pop/dance road, the multi-talented New Jersey bred, L.A. based artist and performer is keeping it raw, real and edgy on Clean SLATE, her infectious independent debut. The multi-talented performer chose the clever title of her EP to reflect two powerful currents in her life:
making the choice to move from the East Coast to pursue her career in Los Angeles, and the idea, artfully expressed with the acronym SLATE, of "Seeking Life After The End" of a relationship -- a driving theme in many of her songs. The five track set embraces and adds a rock edge to her early R&B roots, lays her soul bare and turns her personal losses into universal expressions of hope. Three of the tunes on Clean SLATE developed out of the exciting working relationship Alexis has with fellow Jersey native, pop songwriter and mega producer PJ Bianco (Demi Lovato, The Jonas Brothers, The Veronicas). Vibing in the studio with Bianco and his protégé Zach Hannah, she co-wrote the soaring
midtempo ballad "Worry No More", the high intensity pop-rocker "Don't Need You Now" and the lush piano driven ballad "Are You Gonna Love Me". Alexis penned the other two tracks with another talented songwriter/producer, Andrew Williams (Colbie Caillat, Five For Fighting). The hypnotic, piano driven mid tempo ballad "Your Name In My Heartbeat" and the subtle yet emotionally devastating "Just A Little". "The music I was doing before was straight up pop/dance music," Alexis says, "mostly talking about
clubbing and drinking, going out with friends, and that sort of thing. The songs I'm writing now are about feelings and issues I really care about at this point in my life - love, heartbreak, losing people you love - emotions and situations that are meaningful and that I've experienced as I have matured as a person and artist. The sound is different too. Now it's more focused on the vocals with more of an R&B/soul/rock vibe. I feel like I have finally found my niche in this style."
