The story of the shuttering of thousands of U. S. auto dealerships continues to change. Now representatives of Chrysler and GM are meeting with dealer representatives and Congressional leaders to determine how many dealerships they need ... really.
In a recent closed meeting on Capitol Hill, representatives from Chrysler said they plan to open 103 new franchises across the country. The company is planning for automatic reinstatement of rejected dealers that meet or exceed the company's objective criteria. However, the dealers say the current proposal lacks automatic reinstatement and objective criteria!
Meanwhile, GM's most recent meetings ended with the company proposing that dealerships being terminated could submit appeals to the company's mediation unit. The talks began September 30th as an alternative to legislation that would reverse more than 2,100 dealership closings.
I think I'm getting a headache watching all of this unfold!
Here's the important thing for us to note: Some (probably many) dealerships will not be closed and a few of those that already closed doors may actually reopen. Keep your eyes and ears open. Stay close to your friends in the automotive sector. When these dealerships get affirmed by the company they are going to want to tell your audience.
