With the recent Supreme Court decision to effectively overturn campaign finance reform as a violation of free speech, regardless of your personal position on the matter, this is good for us in the media.
Less restrictions on where the money originates and most likely, more of it.
Are you in a position to get your unfair share?
First: Get your political file in shape. Trust me on this ... audits can be painful and potentially expensive.
Second: Know the rules. When does the window open up before primaries and general elections.
Third: Have an intern or assistant research every political race and referendums in your region for this year and decide if you are going to play on state and local elections.
Fourth: If they are running this year, they already have a campaign manager and treasurer. Find out who it is and reach out.
Fifth: Depending on your market, there is usually some issue money attached to general elections ... Whether it's a bond referendum or an amendment, there is usually money on both sides.
